Hochul bans ‘long guns’ for National Guard troops deployed to NYC subway bag checkpoints




New York Gov. Kathy Hochul banned the use of long guns by National Guardsmen she sent to check bags at Big Apple subway stations — as she continued to defend the controversial deployment.

Hochul issued the ban on military-grade rifles “immediately after” 750 troops were deployed to the subway system, a spokesperson told The Post Sunday.

After the deployment began last week, straphangers entering the subway were greeted by camouflaged and gun-toting soldiers at bag-search checkpoints in a sight reminiscent of the city after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Progressives are so F------ stupid. Who is going to protect the National Guardsmen from armed criminals or terrorists???

Some perspective/proper context...it's just long guns for the specific soldiers that are stationed at the bag check locations that are banned, they are still armed just not with the assault rifles. Soldiers not at bag check locations can still carry the long guns.

Why are the NG even there? Hire all the off shift TSA workers to check bags! I'm sure they all need the money!

This tells me they aren't serious about deterring crime. Nothing deters crime like visibly armed people in camo and combat boots every few meters. Yes, long rifles look scary to a bunch of New Yorkers. That's the point!

The fact that National Guard troops were called to service says something in itself. I'm still planning to move to the Big Apple tomorrow.

In the thread on this that I started a few days ago, I had a link with pictures.
Some Police and NG were both carring AR/M4 class loaded rifles, some were not.

I don't think anybody is really telling them how to do their job, and let's be honest, I don't think bag checks are part of their everyday job either. They are just saying not to have the rifles at the bag checks so that passengers feel more comfortable standing next to them. There are still plenty of armed officers and guardsmen around. Their presence is meant make a would-be criminal have second thoughts about trying to being a knife or other weapon onto the subway and to help put New Yorkers minds at ease a little bit as they just try to commute. I personally think that this wouldn't be necessary if the city itself would be harder on criminals in a more consistent way as the deterrent.
