If all I wanted was to put game on the table and ward off the odd lone asshole, an M6 Scout would be in the running.

Back in the day they could be had from Springfield Armory, made by CZ, for $200. 22LR over 410, meaning that one could shoot rifled 410 slugs for deer... It was my truck and tractor gun for a long time. I am sure the rusty thing is still around here somewhere.

Looks like Chiappa and these guys are still making them

Speaking of CZ, the old CZ52 pistol is a good C&R gun but the cost is crazy now, like $500!?!?!?!?!?!?

One gun? Have to be Ruger 10/22. Don't remember what I paid for it, too long ago.

I'd like to keep one handgun for carry. I don't have any cheap handguns. I'd keep my 351PD light, seven rounds and stone cold reliable.
I don't care if he is an establishment RINO, Kevin McCarthy is sitting on a hand grenade and Lauren Boebert is looking for a reason to pull the pin.

I have had my eye on that! I watched my Mother grow too feeble to even fire a 38Spl. As I age, I want something to meet the bump in the night.

How is it to shoot, especially recoil-wise?

Recoil virtually non-existent. In double action it has a heavy but smooth trigger which is necessary for reliable rimfire ignition. It lightens up with lots of dry fire but you have to use snap caps; plastic drywall anchors also work well. Single action is crisp and light.

Another alternative is the Ruger LCRx, only 6 rounds and about 3 ounces heavier ... even less recoil. It has a steel cylinder (the S&W is aluminium) and Ruger specifically says you can dry fire it without snap caps. IMO it has a better trigger than the S&W.

Federal Punch 22 magnum is a 45 grain JHP (that actually will expand) and produces over 1000 f/s from a 2 inch barrel.

I'll have to nominate the Keltec gen 2 Sub 2000 in 9mm. Super compact and light - it folds up/deploys in a flash and is just 18 inches long which fits easily in a small backback or in a motorcycle saddlebag. This thing was shooting bullseyes right out of the box and has kept zero for at least a thousand rounds. Just a pleasure to shoot. Love this ugly little thing.

    and it uses Glock mags

    Cool choice!

Some of the KelTec stuff is a little too plastic for me, but I could see myself living with that one for my Cheap-1 contest.

Smith & Wesson just released a similar carbine, only negative is it doesn’t use Glock mags. But M&P mags are readily available, plenty of used ones at cheap prices can be found.

I like the fact that it folds to the side instead of over the top, this will allow you to run a red dot on it and still be able to fold the gun. That has always been the one thing about the Kel Tech that always bothered me.

That's easy- when I built my first cheap AR. I've owned many, many SKS's but my Aero based AR was tons and tons of fu to build, shoot and modify.

Bought mine back in 91 or 92 for $100. Saw an ad in the paper. Went to the guys house and picked it up. Ah, the good old days.

Still got it. Haven't shit it in awhile though.
