It was a placemat from a restaurant with a map of the U.S. Jacksonville and Miami were an inch apart. I took them back to Fernandina and as the one guy was speaking I asked the other, "What language is that?"

"It's English. He's from Northern Ireland." I couldn't understand a word he was saying. The sailor from London had to translate.
I was once on vacation in San Antonio and was getting bored after about a week. While doing my laundry I found a map showing sights in the area. Carlsbad Caverns was only about an inch from San Antonio on this map so I told my wife, look its close, lets go see the Caverns. While an interesting drive it was almost 10 hours away at 474 miles! The scale of the map was a bit off I think. From there we went to El Paso, only 151 miles away. When I left New Mexico I had about a half tank of gas. I did not see another sign of civilization until I was about 10 miles from El Paso and almost out of gas!!

    This country is huge!!

Poor Father Brown. His parish is almost as violent as the South side of Chicago!

The only difference between an American and an Englishman is the American thinks 100 years is a long time while the Englishman thinks 100 miles is a long way.

Arrrrh ok you lot, history time. Where I do be live is Gloucester. Once the capital city of England. It’s a small shire but Twas very important.
We have a gert cathedral sitting in the centre of the city, a very small town but granted city status because of its importance. Historic monuments abound where I do live. We emphasise the R word when we speak.

St Oswalds church is under 1/2 mile away from my house. King Alfred’s daughters funeral was celebrated and reenacted a couple of years ago. From Viking boat up the river and paraded through The cathedral was so important king William the conquerors eldest son was buried inside.

Gloucester was first a Roman fortified town = Ceaster
Different spellings of Ceaster abound in England, not everybody could read and write in those days.

    Manchester
    Leicester
    Chester
    bicester
    Gloucester
    Doncaster
    cirencester
    etc etc
Thats only a few off the top of me head.

Gloucester was a Roman square fort originally, built right by the river Severn, a strategic military defensive position.

All around the town the Roman influence is easy to see to this day.

My accent. Terry sounds very much like what I do when I’ve had a few pints of cider, I kid ye not. Terry lives 30 miles away from me, our accents are the same, if I wanted to tune up it wouldn’t take minutes to alter.
Terry lives in Filton in Bristol, my father spoke exactly the same dialect….. I do fight and try to imitate a softer accent.

here you go lovelies, my Gloucestershire West Country accent.

My buddy and I were sitting at the lobby bar in a Mexican resort when a Brit and his son come dragging in after traveling the whole day. They didn't even bother to check in, just went straight to the bar.

We had the best time for the next couple of hours despite not being able to catch two-thirds of what they were saying and having to translate a portion of that into Spanish for the sake of the bartender. By the time our wives showed up I had the Brit dad and the Mexican bartender check to check as I was demonstrating the subtle differences between a Roman nose and a Mayan nose. We thought it was hilarious, the wives didn't see the humor in it and left.

Apply enough booze and there is no such thing as a language barrier.

    Hwicce

Hwicce (Old English: [ˈʍittʃe]) was a tribal kingdom in Anglo-Saxon England. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the kingdom was established in 577, after the Battle of Deorham. After 628, the kingdom became a client or sub-kingdom of Merciaas a result of the Battle of Cirencester.
    Kingdom of the Hwicce
    577–780s
Kingdom of the Hwicce (with later counties). Wychwood Forest, a former Hwicce territory, had apparently been lost before 679

In Olden times where I live it would have been called Hwicce.
