When I was in high school I picked up two men walking down a lonely stretch of highway. They were merchant seamen who's ship had put in at Fernandina Beach. They had two days off and were walking to Miami. I told them it was 380 miles and they showed me their map. It was a placemat from a restaurant with a map of the U.S. Jacksonville and Miami were an inch apart. I took them back to Fernandina and as the one guy was speaking I asked the other, "What language is that?"


"It's English. He's from Northern Ireland." I couldn't understand a word he was saying. The sailor from London had to translate.

YEARS ago, a trio of British sailors on leave from down in Norfolk found their way to the valley and stopped in at my favorite watering hole. Nice guys, spent an entertaining evening drinking and getting OUR asses schooled in darts... to this day I couldn't tell you a word they said.

Yall want the land of weird accents come to the Southern States. Accents change down here from one side of the State to the other and in some cases from one side of town to the other. The San Antonio accent is certainly vastly different from the Richmond VA accent. In fact Tidewater Virginia is vastly different from Appalachian Virginia. It all depended upon who settled in what area. However, I will admit, regardless of what part of the country you may live in you can and do understand the accents of the rest of the country (except the Bronx and Brooklyn), unlike Great Britain where some parts of the United Kingdom may as well be foreign countries.
