What Happened To Russia's Armed Forces?

Simple. They lost the Cold War and the technological revolution. They got mowed down by Moore's Law.

The USSR peaked just before Reagan got elected. Suddenly they realized that techno-spying wasn't good enough and they were doomed to fall farther and farther behind. Eventually, they got demoralized and gave up. The USSR ended as it always had to - collapsed in a disgraceful heap.

Why Is Putin's Army Inept?, by R. Emmett Tyrrell | Creators Syndicate

The ensuing decades were just a matter of Russia kidding itself and everybody else. OBL created a distraction for the US but after his death, and fracking came along even that didn't matter anymore.

Putin needs to acknowledge the obvious: He cannot defeat Ukraine if it has NATO backing. He cannot restore Catherine the Great's borders in our lifetime.

Actually, Russia already has what it needs. NATO provides him with a hodge-podge of 29 small nations who really don't have the stomach for war and can barely agree on anything beyond their fear of an aggressive bear. It is slowly returning to its pre-Bismarck state of squabbling miniature principalities. While Putin certainly found out it can be galvanized by fear of the bear into a powerful defensive force, it can generate no offensive capability if the US does not provide it. Thus, Russia intrinsically has a 600 km wide buffer zone without firing a shot.

All Putin has to do is drop the "growly bear" pose and go back into hibernation and Europe will ignore him. Asia? Russia can adopt an inward-looking posture like the US did in 1865 and concentrate on developing itself. Like the 1865 US, it has resources to burn and space to absorb beaucoups of immigrants. That seems like the most logical approach for the next half-century.

Maybe Russia has to worry about Asia, but that is more a problem they can handle.

Germany, France, and the UK are not as militarily powerful as in 1935, and are self-absorbed by their own petty problems. So, who is threatening Russia?

His ruinous war can be easily ended. March his orcs back to within their 2013 boundaries. Let the Ukrainians have Crimea. turkey will keep Ukraine bottled up just as they did Russia. Russia has fabulous resource reserves. The resources of Ukraine are chicken feed by comparison.

Finally the US will do as it has been trying to do since Crooked Hillary's old man occupied the White House - abandon Europe to its own resources and pull back to the Western Hemisphere.

They lie anyway. It's what they do.

Here's what I think happened to Russia. The political figures became all powerful. When the country spent money on anything those in charge raked off the top of the money to the extent that no "arm" of their country had enough to do what it needed to do. That wasn't known because those in charge were the one's getting rich off of it. The military for instance went to war with tires that were old & cracking, which is basic stuff. As you progress up in war readiness equipment thing were even worse.

To support this theory, I looked up Putin's estimated wealth. The reference I used estimate his wealth at 90 BILLION dollars (not million, billion). Basically those in charge raped the people they were in charge of. Kind of like our politicians are doing to us.

If you have an actual quote from him - as opposed to some interpretation by MSM - in which he claims to be attempting that... or similar, post it.

In the mean time, while you look for the proof of the lie, here is what he REALLY said.

And the reason this is significant is that the pro-Ukraine people are trying to cast Putin as a maniacal dictator hellbent on world conquest.... a Hitler of sorts. So they have repeatedly said Putin was trying to recreate the old empire borders. But there is no evidence that he was. None. So this lie is at the heart of the justification to stop Putin. It's a lie.

I<O, while Nixon's grain sales had short-term benefits for many American farmers, Nixon may have delayed the USSR's collapse by 5-10 years.

TBT to the 1950s and 1960s, Russia never really created semiconductor and computer industries anywhere near that of the US. From the 70s onward, the USSR became increasingly dependent on what it could obtain from the West and East Asia, while the US, Japan, HK, Taiwan, and SoKo accelerated innovation, and EuroLand at least kept pace. US companies currently do much of their wafer fabbing and IC manufacture in Asia, but most R & D is happening at home (IIRC, Intel does some development in Israel). Some fab capacity is still located in the US, and is growing (e.g. in Arizona's Valley of the Sun). Russia, OTOH is pretty dependent on US-or-foreign-created parts and fabs located in Asia.

The USSR and now Russia have significant strengths in metallurgy and in rocket and jet engines. The USSR and Russia also do very well at making the most of mature technologies.

The Fenestraphobe's invasion of Ukraine is faltering because of unrealistic planning, Ukrainian familiarity with Russian weapons and strategies, Ukrainians' motivation (defending one's homelamd vs. orcs' imperial expansion motive), poor Russian logistics, poor leadership that discourages initiative, and Ukrainian adaptability and flexibility. I'm not saying Putin cannot win, but at present he may be avoiding buildings' upper floors and especially upper floor windows and balconies.

I pretty much agree. Russia's corruption is truly world class. Not only senior government officials, but officers down to field grade are constantly 'skimming' supplies for their own enrichment. These guys make Chicago and NYC look like comparative towers of honesty.

For the terminally curious and techno-talk tolerant, this video gives a good overview of how things stand:

For semi industry context, I would suggest checking out revenue info for Intel, Texas Instruments, STMicroelectronics, or similar major semiconductor companies outside of Russia.

Yep, the biggest losers in Russian are Russians not part of the Russian mafia, that is to say just about everyone.

Putin's demise if followed by serious anti-corruption efforts, would be a blessing to the Russian people who have been institutionally raped by their government for 300 years or so.
