Now we are in a nearly post WWI time where if we punish Russia too severely we get Wiemar Republic II, which the watermellons would love, until we get Hitler II, with nukes.

Yes, that is surely correct.

But it really does not frighten me.

Putin is, I believe, a rational person; so I simply cannot imagine that he might use strategic nuclear weapons against the US. (I heard on the news, just the other day, that Britain has enough nuclear weapons to totally destroy all of Russia. And we have more nukes than Britain does. Yes, Russia has far more nukes than the US and Britain combined; but at some point, we are just talking about bouncing the rubble.)

But if he tries to attack Russia directly, Biden may suddenly take a fancy to slavic food and get that polonium blini that @Northern Rivers' keeps seeing in his dreams. I cannot predict, with any certainty (or near-certainty) what Putin might do with regard to using tactical nukes against Ukraine.

I can only say that he is quite unlikely to ever use strategic nukes against the US--a point that you have already conceded.

Oh, if he were to use tactical nukes against Ukraine, there is almost no possibility that we might respond in kind, in my opinion. Far more likely is the possibility that we would totally destroy Russia's navy and air force, from the air.

He had several goals orignially.

First and foremost to gain control of Ukraine's natural resources and nuclear plants.

Second he wanted to send a message to Europe and that message was, "You could be next" to secure his position as a great leader of a great world power.

He never got over the collapse of the Soviet Union and Russia's becoming a 2nd rate super power.

He also wanted to secure his legacy and his hold on power for the rest of his life.
