    Admitting The Obvious

The autonomous motor vehicle is a long, long, way off.

Industry admitting true self-driving cars may be impossible – HotAir

So why all the hoo-ha about self-driving cars and trucks? I can safely apply the engineer's curse to self-driving vehicles: It won't work. Even parking assist software is making plenty of money for body shops.

Seems counter-intuitive. Technology has developed auto-pilots that can do the most insane maneuver in aviation: Landing a jet on a rolling, pitching aircraft carrier at night in horrendous weather. But the USN does it with almost every sortie, and is so consistent the deck crew has to rotate the (preferred) 3 wire because every plane that lands hits the SAME SPOT on that wire and quickly puts a kink in it. Their new autonomous tanker relies on this. CAGs still make pilots do a number of human landings as a backup procedure, but on those tough hairy nights the autopilots always do it.

How common is that? They say you are not a carrier aviator unless you've seen the carrier's screws out of the water on downwind. A forty-foot vertical excursion on a fifth-mile long ship.

But the fact is that driving a car is more art than science. Even a rookie driver has to learn to outguess other drivers. Look for nose-diving as evidence of braking. Look for leaning as a telltale indicating intention to turn. Use other traffic as a screen when your view of the situation is not the best. So far, AI has just not figured this out.

The carrier auto-pilot cheats. It uses the targetting radar/computer to predicting where the carrier will be at a point in time. Cars and trucks don't have this luxury.

Work on truly important stuff, like using CNG as motor fuel or if you insist on electric cars, building those 800 nukes it will take to support EVs.

Before going any further, somebody should make a cogent, factual case for the need for self driving to even exist in the first place.

that's easy, when you have that 500 mile stretch of straight road with no twists bends turns bumps and no other vehicle within 501 miles radius.

They have to come up with those ideas, everytime they create another gyspy rig in the end whatever it costs them to buy produce and put it in the vehicle you and I pay at least triple that

Self driving cars are worthless, even on a stretch of 500 mile road, anyone that takes a nap, eats lunchm, does thier fingernails or reads the paper instead of watching where the car is going is nuts....so just drive it anywy

I think the whole 'self driving car' was a work from the get-go to make Tesla's seem like they are the next great technological leap. It was never going to happen and they knew it.
    Just a sales gimmick.

I knew it. Therefore they knew it.
There is no need or market for self driving cars.

Self-driving cars are just another expensive electronic gee-gaw used to jack up the price of cars.

Lane-changing radar. Self-applied brakes. We got by just fine without them.

You wanna improve cars? How about a little knee and shoulder room?
