Is gender-specific clothing a more recent concept?

I have read a couple articles lately about dresses, skirts, and men. The claim is that many clothing items used to be gender-neutral and up until WW2 it was considered accepted fashion for men to wear long-skirted coats and things. That is also the time where the word "gender" itself has started to be used.

Well as a woman I wear Jeans often most of the time to work outside
even to go grocery...but I don't wear *slut* Jeans

I wear man loose short sleeves t-shirts because It feels comfortable

Running shoes or boots

I don't remember when I did wear a skirt or dress

That's a horse of a different color (as the saying goes) and is probably what the OP was getting at, and I'm all good with that.

Coats maybe, I mean they wore those horrible fur coats in the 20's I think. But I have never read about unisex dresses.

Wool Robes. At one time, in medieval Europe, and China, nearly everyone wore them, along with a knit cap and cowel. It was a mini-ice-age. Wear it or die.

That is a 30ft pile of horse shit!

Men wore pants, women wore dresses or skirts.

I remember my Mom (one of the WWII Rosie the riveter types) told me is was so strange and even demeaning to wear work pants and shirts (the kind the company gets laundered for you) or jump suits.
They did it because they knew they were replacing the men at work and had to wear the work clothing.

Look at Revolutionary war paintings, Civil war pictures, Old West photos, turn of the century street photos. There was clear distinction between men's and women's clothing dress style.
