    A Response From Hornaday......

On the Frontier ammo they use DoD primers which are harder to prevent slam fires for M-4s and machine guns. My bolt action firing pin probably doesn't extend far enough to strike the primer with sufficient force all the time to to fire the round.

So it looks like Frontier ammo is best for AR platform type rifles.

I was liking Hornaday's Frontier line because it's reasonably priced, in today's market, and available.

    Then I read the reviews.

Hornaday is known for using premium bullets and loading them to above average velocities, but something seems to have gone amiss with this line.

It's the DoD primers that are the problem apparently.

The AR trigger group is about as simple and basic as it can get for the semi-auto as we civilians know it. Untouched and mil-spec it's not bad... but is easily improved upon. The Frontier line is not for anyone who likes a more refined trigger release.

In doing more research it appears the Frontier line is loaded at Lake City arsenals. There appears to be problems with this line from hot loads to rounds that just don't shot. This appears to be military type ammo.

Lake City arsenals has a good reputation as far as I know, and yes - military ammo. I actually don't know about the primer issues, just following your lead. But reviews are all over the place... I was assuming problems are related to lack of quality control while trying to keep up with demand and insufficient packaging for 1k + rounds per package.

I know nothing of your fancy guns. But there are sometimes similar problems with 7.92x57 Mauser ammo that is foreign surplus. I simply bought a heavier spring in case I find that to be true with my ammo .... much of it foreign military surplus.

In all seriousness (yes I can do that) it's about quality not quantity and knowing the ammo you have will fire in your firearm.

I haven't bought Frontier because of mixed/bad reviews, but then there's plenty of available ammo from manufactures with mixed reviews depending on the the 'lot'..... it boils down to having a sufficient supply of ammo that you know you can trust - thru use, practice, training, etc..... and that's what firearms and ammo are for..... to trust to work (with sufficient training and practice) when you need them.
