The Western States ® 100-Mile Endurance Run is the world’s oldest 100 mile trail race. The Run starts in Olympic Valley, California, near the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, and ends 100.2 miles later in Auburn, California. In the decades since its inception in 1974, Western States has come to represent one of the ultimate endurance tests in the world.

Traversing the traditional lands of the Nisenan, Washoe, and other neighboring Indigenous Peoples, the Western States Trail climbs more than 18,000 feet and descends nearly 23,000 feet before runners reach the finish at Placer High School in Auburn. In the miles between Olympic Valley and Auburn, runners experience the majestic high country of Emigrant Pass and the Granite Chief Wilderness, the crucible of the canyons of the California gold country, a memorable crossing of the ice cold waters of the Middle Fork of the American River, and finally the historic reddish brown trails that led many travelers, including gold prospectors, to Auburn.

Entries are capped at ~450, and runners are chosen by lottery from among those who complete qualifying events. Among 2022 entrants, the only unrepresented continent is Antarctica.

A running friend completed the http://www.hennepinhundred.com hundred mile distance today. A couple months ago he completed a 200 mile event. Also today was the https://www.tcslondonmarathon.com ; last weekend was the Berlin Marathon.

Today and tomorrow are the Chicago Marathon and San Jose Half Marathon events. Both of these have shorter distances on today, Saturday, with the long distance on Sunday. The Javelina Jundred, run in Arizona, will be on the 29th.

While I've done the San Jose Half a couple of times, Rock n Roll events are really pricey, and I'm not a big crowds (10K-30K) person (I also haven't done the large crowd Silicon Valley Turkey Trot in years because big crowds). I've also been trying to get through a leg muscle strain, so I'll be doing a 5K next week.

Damn it! I forgot to qualify again!
Is there anything people will not practically kill themselves to compete at?

A running friend is doing "The Tahoe Trifecta", organized by this org, https://www.laketahoemarathon.com . It's 3 half marathons in three days around different parts of the shore of Lake Tahoe. It's Sunday morning, so she's completed two of the halfs, and will soon start the third. "The Tahoe Triple" is 3 marathons in three days, circling Lake Tahoe. BTW, the lake is at 6,225 altitude, very relevant to what one can do and how fast.
