Retiring military people to become LEO's

With the shortage of LEO's and even the lack of people applying to become a LEO nowadays, our state's D-Guv has come up with a plan. He wants to hire military personnel that will be retiring soon, and train them as LEO's.

What in your opinion, would be the pros/cons of his plan?

I have no problem with it as long as they meet the requirements, a big issue would be comprehensive psche evals...

Seeing as you can retire from the military as young as 38 with 20 years in and most will probably be in their early 40’s they won’t be too old. I don’t think it’s a bad idea just won’t give them a very high number, what’s wrong with just recruiting younger vets in their 20’s or early 30’s.

Back in my day when I first went into law enforcement I’d say two out of three cops coming on the job were recently discharged from the service. I was in the academy five months after coming home from Korea after my enlistment, I’ll take a LE agency full of vets over one full of college grads any day.

I realize Dem pols tend to think of military people as expendable idiots, but does he really imagine retiring military people will jump to get jobs in cities where police officers are condemned if they are effective and condemned if something bad happens because they didn't prevent it? I realize KY probably has fewer cities like that than some states, but the cities most under-staffed are probably cities where the ruling Dem pols see police officers as having targets on their backs.

i'd imagine those that do would be establishment minded, schutzstaffel yes-men whose mantra would always be 'just following orders.'

The ones that truly believed their oath to the US Constitution would not sign up for that.

I am generally for anything that provides good stable employment that welcomes Vets to the Civilian workforce.

One would think that some MOSs would lend themselves more readily to LEO work.

I would love to see Police be max Patriotic. With the shit that keeps coming out of DC, we are gonna need it.

I know I always appear contrary by default but I always say what I truly believe from my experience and empirical evidence, as best I can. So no surprise to see that I do not fully agree with a policy of "Ex Military automatically make good LEO's.
It is my experience they are no better or worse than non military personnel.

I found that a significant number of ex military could not think outside a narrow conduit. They were happy to do what they were told and no more. They lacked the capacity to consider a wider understanding of s situation. They would wait until a superior pointed them in a particular direction. Not all but many.
There was not an automatic morphing from their former job to the job of law enforcement.
One particular aspect: They would be great in standing their ground when confronted with an aggressive person but they did not have the ability to deescalate - I am not saying the fired it up, I am simply saying they lacked the capacity to think beyond control and order. Not necessarily a bad thing.

I was in charge of a former RSM Royal Marine Commando - imagine that?? I was much younger than him. I was in awe of his RSM rank that is some acheivement. I respected that. He was immaculate as an officer. But he wanted order, nothing could be out of place, he would shout and bark. Life in normal society does not fit into perfect order and people do not blindly obey you. No crim cared he was a former RSM Commando. He had to adjust. I had to sit him down and tell him directly. It was not nice for me, t was my job to do so. He changed. He became totally relaxed and of course, an outstanding officer.
