    Foreign MRE taste testing

Some vids a bit long. Since Obozo made it illegal to sell US Mil MREs looking at foreign options is a good idea.

Turning the dry bars into porridge or soup really did the trick.

Not enough of the Ukrainian ones to go around now I suppose.

MRE's have carried the "Not for Retail Sale US Gov't Property" warning since 97.

You can still buy them through places like Ebay and at gun shows but there are much better emergency rations out there on the market.

The American MRE companies had an immediate solution.

They just took the same contents (modified a little bit) and put them in clear plastic bags, instead of dark green or brown. And they sell them for about twice what I used to be able to get them at the surplus stores.

In my early days as a locomotive engineer, I took them with me as a backup food supply. I kept a few at my far-end locker, and one in my traveling duffle. So if I lost or forgot my lunch, or it got ruined...or got to the other end and then couldn't make or buy a lunch (a lot of times) there was the MRE.

It was as durable as a toolbag, and none the worse for being bounced around a month.

I discovered MREs when they were a new innovation. My ex's brother was in ROTC in college and he had to do the OCS school one summer (maybe more than one). MREs were new in the 1980s, and all of them freeze-dried (they have given up on that, now) He brought three cases home and invited me to help myself.

We took a bunch canoeing. They did help - not only food, but when the canoe tipped, they kept the dufflebag floating. Nothing lost and it was all dried out the next day.

Now I have some MREs in my emergency food stores. Hopefully, I find a better use for them then surviving a famine...but that may be how it goes.

I can make one last a full day, so I'm in good shape that way at least. Maybe I'll lose some weight.

The US Armed Services in the 1980s, was actually trying to look out for their men. It was the rebuilding after the Vietnam debacle; interest in enlistment was at a record low; and the all-volunteer services as a concept was less than a decade old.

So the freeze-dried MREs I had were actually pretty good. I had fun, on that camping trip, eating the dried stuff and chugging water...mixing it in the stomach. My ex, on the other hand (with me) was disgusted at the sizzing coming from my middle regions. She said it sounded like I'd swallowed Alka-Seltzer.

But...other nations mostly regard their servicemen as having short useful lives. Use quickly, generally as cannon fodder, and then throw in a trench with some lime. The food will be the minimum they can feed the men to get them to still act like they're in an army.

That IDF quad meal has had no advancements since C-Rats. I'd hate to have to ruck that...

The Ukr MRE is pretty awesome looking.

In the Canadian army I remember breakfast MREs that were eggs in a foil pouch that were supposed to be an omelet. The 'omelet' would take the square shape of the foil pouch so when unwrapped, it resembled a lung. Which is what we called it. Breakfast lung. They also came with sausage bits in them...which we called ' breakfast lung with cancer'.

They tasted alright, as far as I can remember...
