The big man of the 1980s "Showtime" Lakers was a dominant presence at center, but was he really all that he is cracked up to be?
It has been said that he didn't "work hard enough on defense". And that "lots of times (he didn't) run down court." And that he "didn't really try except during the playoffs."
Was Lew Alcindor overrated?
Should he have been an airline pilot instead?

Having been the Big Man on several basketball (rec league...) teams, I will repair your understanding of the issue.
I outweighed some of the guys by up to nearly double, not fat, muscle and large frame. On the other hand I was one of maybe two that could play above the rim.
I had no need to waste double the energy that the little skinny guy running down the court used, because we had little skinny guys for that. I just had to get down to center of the key in time to thwart their big guys from easy shots, and stuff ever shot, or to our offensive end in time to rebound.
Nobody wants to tire out your best shot defender.

Never been a big basketball fan, so my opinion would not be very valid. But I’ve always heard he was one of the best ever, hard to think of him being overrated with so many believing that.
