Damascus rejects Pentagon findings, demands troop withdrawal


The Syrian permanent mission to the UN stated on Friday that the US must withdraw its troops from the country at once and pay reparations for the deaths of dozens of civilians in a 2019 airstrike in the town of Baghuz.


Damascus categorically rejected a Pentagon report claiming it was not at fault for the attack, declaring its conclusions represent “an admission of negligence that calls for accountability.”


The Pentagon had released a report on Tuesday claiming the March 18, 2019 airstrike targeting an Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) encampment in Syria's Baghuz, initially believed to have killed some 70 people, did not violate the rules of engagement or laws of war.

In truth, it took until 2019 for the U.S. to finally pull out all its troops:

Trump made many mistakes, and I used to think that pulling out of Syria was one of them, but I've changed my mind. Ideally, the U.S. would have never gotten in, but like Afghanistan, I suspect there was no point where they could have gotten out gracefully; I suspect it had to end the way it began, as an unmitigated disaster.

So there you have it- unlike in Afghanistan or Iraq, the U.S. didn't even overthrow the leader of Syria, despite 14 years of trying. Compare that to how fast the Taliban retook Afghanistan after the U.S. left and we can get a sense of how bad the U.S. is at truly changing a nation via military means. Mind you, the above sources are from publications that are -sympathic- to the U.S.'s aims to overthrow Asad.
