Russia has put themselves in a bad position. I am not sure if they badly miscalculated or what happened.
Maybe Putin's military people told him the devastation would be so great that Ukraine would surrender in 3 days. When that didn't happen, they were committed, so they slogged on for over a month. That didn't work either, and it gave the west time to help Ukraine. That deepened Ukraine resolve even more. Now, Russia has pulled back, willing to settle for a "land bridge" and seemingly indefensible territory That Ukraine will want back. Russia is now saddled with a forever war and even more countries wanting NATO membership to protect them! Europe will now be motivated to get weaned off Russian energy. Russia won't have the funds it needs to support it's forever war, but it will try, with a collapse looming in the future. Not a good position to be in. And with health problems, Putin does not need this kind of problem. If there is a leader in the wings ready to take over and provide stability for the future, we are not hearing/reading about it.
Doesn't matter who was right, who was wrong, or what the history is. The future is what is important, and the cards are being stacked against Russia.
