The Great Flood: A Sumerian Story

The Flood Myth:
The Sumerian hero Gilgamesh traveled the world in search of a way to cheat death. On one of his journeys, he came across an old man, Utnapishtim, who told Gilgamesh a story from centuries past. The gods brought a flood that swallowed the earth.
The gods were angry at mankind so they sent a flood to destroy him. The god Ea, warned Utnapishtim and instructed him to build an enormous boat to save himself, his family, and "the seed of all living things." He does so, and the gods brought rain which caused the water to rise for many days. When the rains subsided, the boat landed on a mountain, and Utnapishtim set loose first a dove, then a swallow, and finally a raven, which found land. The god Ishtar, created the rainbow and placed it in the sky, as a reminder to the gods and a pledge to mankind that there would be no more floods.

I would imagine if a deity was doing it would a "great flood". I know when I pee on a bug it must seem like a "great flood" to the bug.

Heres something to think about:

Why do civilisations who have never met, and sometimes apparantly separated by hundreds of years, all have the same basic set of mythological stories?. In particular, why does the Hebrew Bible carry practically the same basic story of a flood as the Sumerians, the Mesopotamians, the Assyrians, in Norse mythology, Hindu, Chinese, the Greek mythology, the Chinese, the Irish, the Polynesians, the Mayans, the Hawiaans, the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa tribe of Native Americans in North America, the Muisca and Cañari Confederation in South America, Africa, and some Aboriginal tribes in Australia.


Is it not possible that this supposed planet wide flood actually occurred, and that all these cultures actually witnessed it and that why its in their mythology? Just saying........

Regional floods have occurred everywhere. But there is no evidence supporting a planet-killing worldwide flood. I had a thread on it but someone closed it.

The stories in the Hebrew bible were borrowed from Mesopotamia.
