The world's tallest nation is getting shorter

Although height has increased over the last 100 years, the study showed Dutch men born in 2001 were 1 cm shorter than their 1980 counterparts. For women, the difference was more pronounced with a difference of 1.4 cm.

The 1980 generation may have been the tallest ever, benefiting from a huge increase in height.
Dutch men born in 1980 stood at an average height of 183.9 cm, and were 8.3 cm taller than those born in 1930. Women born in 1980 were also significantly taller at 170.7 cm, compared to 165.4 cm for those born in 1930.
The study by Statistics Netherlands, municipal health service the GGD and the National Institute for Public Health, the RIVM, analyzed 719,000 Dutch-born individuals aged between 19 and 60 who self-reported their height, and used the average height at age 19 as a benchmark.
The reason for the height decrease is partly related to increased levels of immigration from shorter population groups, according to researchers. However, growth also tapered off for individuals whose parents were both born in the Netherlands, and for those whose four grandparents were all Dutch-born.
Dutch men with no family history of migration did not show any increase in height, while Dutch women without any migration in their family got shorter.
However, the Dutch have stood head and shoulders above the rest of the world for their height increases over the last 70 years, with the streets of the Netherlands showing a very different picture in 2020 compared to the early 1950s, according to researchers.
While around 3% of the 1930-34 generation were at least 190 cm tall, in 2020 more than 20% is at least 190 cm, with 7% at more than 195 cm. In the 1950s, 42% of young men were shorter than 175 cm -- but in 2020, that figure is just 12%.

Actually getting smaller in general might be the way to sustainability through genetic engineering. Imagine the average human is 4 feet tall. Less space requirements , less energy needs, less food and water required , less building materials needed.
Very few drawbacks as predation is not a big factor for humans and we can coorespondingly breed smaller dogs. Suirprized Gretta hasn;'t though of this.

When I was a kid, it was always fascinating to go to the surviving forts in Toronto and along the Niagara River from around the time of the war of 1812. The bunks were (still are, I presume) all built for men with an average height of about 5 foot 4.

My whole family is kind of tall, 6ft and over, my sister is even 5ft10, my cousin who is German was 6ft9, so I actually thought I was short growing up since I was around him I'm the shortest of three brothers at 6ft, my other two are 6ft1 and 6ft2. My dad was 5ft11 and Mom 5ft7 or 8. I figured it's because I'm of German Ancestry, also have some Scottish and Norwegian as well. I think Height is mostly determined by Ancestry most German Peoples in Northerm Europe and the Scandinavian Countries are mostly taller than most, Dutch are a Germanic people, so when they mix with other People's their height will decrease.

My family is tall also.... comes from both sides, my mom's and dad's...both sides were German mostly with my maternal grandfather being Scandinavian. I was tall, my Scandinavian husband is tall, our kids are all tall. At 5' 9" I was the shortest in the family. Due to a spinal injury some 30 years that caused my spine to curve, I am only 5'7" now and shrinking as it compresses with age. My tall family seems to tower over me. My two shortest sons are 6' 0". My husband is 6'2" and one son is 6' 3" while my daughter is 5' 10".

While I like tallness, I agree that shorter people are probably more sustainable.

The Germanic people of Europe eat more pork, they are taller because of this. The British are short compared to them, in feudal times the population couldn’t hunt in the forests for deer or wild bore, the Lords subjugated us and we ate from the land, hardly any protein, turnips and some grains were the staple diet.
My fathers family side are all over 6ft, my female cousins are 6ft red headed. My brothers sons are 6footers. My sons are 5ft 10” 5ft 9” respectively.

The English love turnips! Well...some, do.

You're only as good as your last performance.

One of my favorite modern composers is Arjen Luccasen who is Dutch. He is about 6 ft 8 or 9 in. tall. He looks like a giant on stage. He even tried to put the others up on platforms but he still overpowers with stage presence.

I'm 5 ft 9 in with a stocky build. When I played football, I was told that I looked like a tree stump--a battering ram. THere's a tall gene in the family but I didn't get it. My brother is 6 ft 4 inches tall and so is his son. I have another nephew that's 6 ft 5 in tall. Height doesn't intimidate me. One good punch to the gut and their head comes down to my level. Then they won't be standing long.
