Lincoln emancipated the slaves in the rebelling states, with immediate effect. Your statement is therefore patently false.

The Emancipation Proclamation did not free a single slave because Lincoln did not have military control over the area it covered. He could only free slaves in the Union and the EP did not do that. Contraband slaves reacted to the EP by attaching themselves to Union units but they were not officially free. Lincoln issued the EP as a military order to boost morale at a low point for the Union forces. It had no teeth and arguably prolonged the war by giving the CSA something to recruit with outside of conscription.

Making it a recognized national holiday would not be a bad idea. It is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States.
No, it was the emancipation of slaves in a country the United States was invading and it only emancipated the slaves in the parts of the foreign country that had not yet been conquered and subjugated. Slaves in Kentucky, which had already been subjugated were not freed and that's why Gen. U.S. Grant's family got to keep their slaves. Slaves in Delaware, a slave state that did not secede kept their slaves. And the real joker, southern businessmen caught in the North, with a slave or two, by the outbreak of the invasion kept their slaves.

Slaves in the United States weren't freed until the Constitutional Amendments came down. That would be 13th and 14th.

Every classroom I was in growing up had a picture of Abraham Lincoln. I suppose the occupying forces required it.

And, the slaves the Emancipation Proclamation did free didn't stay free long. They became sharecroppers and day laborers which the southern aristocracy had recognized as a superior system of slavery than chattel slavery even before the war.

People need to ask themselves why General Sherman offered recently freed slaves 40 acres and a mule when he knew full well he had no authority to make the offer and it would never happen. The answer is in the results. Slaves kept sitting where they were waiting for their 40 acres and a mule and didn't go north where they weren't wanted.

Wow. So the consensus here seems to be that the freeing of the slaves - however that was achieved - should not be celebrated, because that's just some special gimme to the, how do y'all put it - the "gibmedats" - and therefore no federal holiday celebrating the freeing of the slaves should be made.

    Pretty sad.
