Amazon Challenges Hundreds of Ballots in Alabamas Workers Union Drive

Amazon challenges hundreds of ballots in Alabama workers’ union drive

Election will determine if workers in Bessemer will form the first labor union at an Amazon warehouse in the US

“Amazon has challenged hundreds of ballots in a vote to form a union at one of its warehouses in Alabama in a unionization drive seen as one of the most important labor fights in recent American history.
The National Labor Relations Board on Thursday began to open the ballots and start tabulating votes in the election in Bessemer, Alabama.
Some 3,215 votes were cast in the election out of more than 5,800 eligible employees. The election will determine if workers in Bessemer will form the first labor union at an Amazon warehouse in the US.
According to the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, hundreds of ballots were challenged, mostly by Amazon.
“There remain hundreds of challenged ballots mostly by the employer that will need to be addressed after the public count. As the ballot envelopes are opened and the ballots are counted there’s a possibility that more issues could impact the final results,” the RWDSU said.
The unionization drive has sparked huge political interest and a roster of leftwing politicians – and even some Republicans – have spoken out in support of it or visited the state. The US labor movement sees it as a bellwether case for hopes of expanding its power, especially in areas of the economy – such as online retail – that are increasingly dominant.”

For what it's worth, conditions in those Amazon factories can be potentially harsh. I've read somewhere that a lot of the workers keep a bottle near them at all times so they can relieve themselves without leaving their post to use the bathroom.

That must indicate the first count did not go the union way.

Amazon should just embrace its D stripes and let the union have a seat at the table.

    Ironic how this works, huh?

Once fully unionized, prices will rise dramatically, and Amazon will see business drop greatly.

Wait a minute ... in a captive workforce of 5800 employees, only 3200 chose to vote on this important issue that affects them all? What the hell is wrong with people. These votes are usually agreed upon to happen at the workplace, so there is no excuse for missing them. No mail ins, no late voting, no absentee. Vote when you show up to work.

Conduct Elections | National Labor Relations Board

My guess would be that many of the employees are "part-time". Amazon probably arranged schedules to permit a big chunk of workers not working the day of elections, and the off employees did not go to vote. Was this a limited day election or was there a several day window in which the workers could vote?

I understand when people chose not to vote in a political, government run election, but this is the kind of election where I would expect near total participation.

I think it’s funny how fast liberal businesses get conservative when money is involved...

I was Chief Steward of The Max Factor Plants and on the Executive Board of the Local ~ You could count on ~ the union was heavy Communist ~ Harry Bridges, the Founder of ILWU was an Australian Communist and a money grabbing Crook ( I Met the Bastard at the Hawaiian Convention ) ~ I was forced to join the ILWU as a Mechanic working for Max Factor and took over as Chief Steward for when the Chief Steward quit because of the problems it caused with his employer ```

At the Convention I met Johnie Royal, from San Pedro, Ca, a great guy, representing the Fishermen ```

AT one point I called the FBI and spoke to an agent, that's when I realized being a Communist wasn't against the Law ```

I had read that they voted not to unionize. I don't know much about how all that works, but if the leftists were for it, then I guess it's good that they didn't.
