Must be a slow day on the net if we're talking nursery rhymes. Haven't heard that since my daughter would run around the house singing it when she was little back in the 80's.
Well I'll be darned - nice work Kodiak, it never dawned on me to look it up under a fairy tale, or kids song - but, yes, I remember it vividly from my childhood, and those of my nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters. There are a few of them now that I still remember after you dug them up for us. I never thought anything about the origin of the tune, and I am absolutely sure my mother didn't pick it up from a book. Probably heard it on radio or something, but she loved to sing and "this old man" was one of her favorites. And, of course, ours too. Thanks for putting a face on an old memory which brought so much joy from childhood, not only my own, but so many other children my Mom regularly sang it to. Last time I was visiting Virginia, my nephew's new toddler was having a fit and wouldn't go to sleep for us. Everybody had tried just about everything, but he was just in one of those little tikes moods to be obstinate. Finally I got him on my lap, and must have went through "Itsey Bitsey Spider" 40-times, which he just loved, before he tired of it and fell asleep. The ladies were amazed. Thanks again.
