    Likely a contested election

Well, it is now just five days until Election Day (although more than 70 million Americans have already voted, as of yesterday--Wednesday, October 28, as I write this).

But too many people seem to assume that we will know who the president-elect is as of next Tuesday--or next Wednesday, anyway.

    Frankly, I rather doubt it.

It is my understanding that both Donald Trump and Joe Biden have armies of lawyers set to contest the results in multiple states, should the other appear to be the winner.

This could easily make Bush versus Gore (in 2000) look like the very apotheosis of simplicity, by comparison.

This is why many people hope that the election will be an utter blowout--either way.

I find it disturbing that this election could very well be a toss-up when Biden is a lamer Democratic candidate than McGovern or Mondale. Nixon and Reagan crushed them in a 49-state landslide, yet you're telling me that Joe Biden-- a man with mashed potatoes for brains-- will make it a toss-up with Trump? What planet am I living on?

I dont think theres any doubt that there will be a LONG contested election with the supreme court finally having to end it.

That should tell you right there that most Americans are unfit to vote. What's the point in having a democracy when most voters can't think beyond simplistic distinctions like "Democrat good, Republican bad"? Even Neanderthals were smarter than this.

You are living on a planet where one party (Democrats) can not and will not accept defeat no matter how bad they lose. They give a whole to meaning to the term "sore losers".

Well, Hillary Clinton has already advised Joe Biden not to concede, under any circumstances...

You are quite correct: McGovern and Mondale both lost in 49-state landslides. And Biden is no better than these.

What has changed, I believe, is the electorate: Could a Richard Nixon or a Ronald Reagan be elected nowadays--in an era in which more and more voters prefer the candidate who offers more Free Stuff?

I would say the key issues have changed, too. In '72, everyone was talking about what to do about Vietnam. In '84, it was all about the economy and keeping us from sliding back down into the economic crises that plagued much of the '70s. Nowadays, everything's about pie-in-the-sky bullshit like BLM/racism and climate change.

I predict that the SCOTUS will replace the electoral college and now start electing presidents.
