    Detroit Police Chief on Preventing Riots, Damage: We Dont Retreat

    Explaining how the police have succeeded in preventing riots or at least limiting the damage from riots caused by Black Lives Matter protests, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said, We dont retreat here in Detroit.

    Were just not going to do it, Chief Craig said on FNCs Tucker Carlson Tonight, July 28. You saw the images, Tucker, of streets where there was lawlessness, looting, burning, no sight of police officers. We werent giving up ground to the radicals.

    Since protests started following the death of George Floyd on May 25, authorities in Portland, Ore., alone, reported that protests and vandalization caused the destruction of property -- $23 million in damages and lost customers to downtown businesses.

    Craig explained why Detroits experience has been different than so many other cities seeing large amounts of violence and destruction.

    Detroiters are fed up with these radical protests, the chief said. Im not talking about the peaceful protestors. Im talking about the core group: These misguided radicals that have tried to incite violence in our city.

    They said were not going to put up with it, he continued. And so we got a couple of things. We got a great police department, great leadership, but we have a community that stands with us and by us and said, enough is enough.

    Detroit, which in 2019 had the highest-reported violent crime rate in the United States, had numerous arrests following protests, which started on May 29. Nevertheless, Detroit has not had a single business looted or destroyed by protestors.

    Detroit doesn't have a single business left standing to loot or destroy. It's easy to defend a city that looks like Berlin after the war.

    There are still viable parts of Detroit, including business districts.

    Are there vast wastelands as well? Yes. And some of the photography that comes out of those areas is both haunting and beautiful.

    Chief James Craig doesn't quite fit the mold and has faced his own calls to resign in the last couple of years. The good news for Detroit, once you hit rock bottom, there is nowhere to go but up.
