Needles on Beach Not the Clean Up Story

What do snakes, needles and Styrofoam have in common? Long Beach’s coastline

What do snakes, needles and Styrofoam have in common? Long Beach’s coastline

Plastic, Styrofoam and even needles are the usual suspects during Long Beach resident Karim Vazquez’s periodic beach cleanups, but a large dead snake isn’t what he expected Monday afternoon in Alamitos Beach.

Vazquez and a friend found a snake that was about 4 feet long near the waterline around 4 p.m., after rain sprinkled the city earlier that day. He said he’s found dead animals on the beach before, but he’s never found anything like this.

“Snakes? No, but usually once a day I find something odd,” Vazquez said. He said he had been cleaning the beach in his spare time every day for about a week when he found the snake.

It was day 6 of the 7 day #longbeach beach cleanup challenge and it was a little more of the same. Straws, bottle caps, plastic lids, styrofoam, needles, snakes...

Does anyone recall how Plastic Straws are the Big Threats to our Oceans?

Is a dirty needle good for sea life of any kind?

Damn, that's disgusting. I grew up in SoCal (Redondo Beach) and all I ever remember washing up on the beach was seaweed, jellyfish and those black tar chunks that would stick to your feet.

Where I grew up, Moss Landing beach was our closest, there were often dead Sea Lions.

My gawd, there must be a hundred needles there! On one beach!!! Are there really that many hard core addicts on the beach? I can only imagine what's on the streets!

If someone forced me to wear a mask, I don't know if I could resist the temptation to draw 4 fingers w/the middle one pointed toward a nostril.

I recall the tar that was so hard to clean. And once my brother got stung by a Jelly Fish!

But rather that than step on a Dirty Needle I think............but here comes the New Normal!
