PG&E power shutdown planned to avoid sparking wildfires in Northern California

PGE power shutdown to avert Northern California wildfire danger today - Live updates - CBS News

California's largest utility company planned to cut off power to as many as 800,000 customers on Wednesday to prevent its equipment from sparking wildfires. The National Weather Service warned the fire danger in Northern California was expected to reach "extreme" levels as winds picked up.
CBS News correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti reported Tuesday evening, with the first blackouts just hours away, that most of Northern California was on edge, waiting for the lights to go out.
Pacific Gas & Electric warned of "one of the most severe dry wind events we've seen in our territory in recent years," and to prepare for it the utility said it "expects to begin turning off power in some areas early Wednesday, just after midnight."

One of these days I'd like to get a generator installed, so when the power goes out we still have electricity. I hear its a long drawn-out and pricey thing, though.

I have problems with utilities being allowed to sell other products and services besides the original service they were originally licensed to provide. They have an unfair marketing advantage over other businesses. Especially when they can do things like shutting off the power to increase generator sales

Yes, and PG&E is the only game in town. Most unfair advantage.

to do it right you want a way in the house to transfer to generator and a way to plug the generator into the house. then you need to plan how much power you need and how to manage that. do you need a refrigerator and lights? a heater or AC is more of a challenge. stuff you never worry about as long as you have 200 amps coming in from the electric company.

Several people on our block have hardwired installed generators. They automatically kick in when the power goes out. Having power in my area is a big concern. Summer 100-110 Winter can be brutal too. Even 50F in a house with no power for a week is life-threatening.

I bet in a year or two or three we will hear that the true reason PG&E shut down power was that they were getting a higher price selling it to another state.

I remember the rolling blackouts that happened every other afternoon and PG&E was crying about forced maintenance and then it turned out the truth was they were getting a better deal out of state.
