Thousands of asylum seekers (https://inews.co.uk/topic/asylum-seekers?ico=in-line_link)are set to be sent to Rwanda (https://inews.co.uk/topic/rwanda-policy?ico=in-line_link)by the UK in the first year of the controversial deportation scheme (https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/uk-asylum-rwandans-after-deportation-deal-2932291?ico=in-line_link), according to internal Government planning.
Around 2,000 people are poised to be deported to the central African nation in the first six months, with the vast majority of these coming in months five and six, while around 5,000 will be sent in year one of the scheme.
The figures were revealed to i by sources involved in scenario and capacity planning for the controversial deportation deal since it was first announced in April 2022.

Lords stages

The House of Lords considered the bill between 18 January and 12 March 2024. It made ten amendments during report stage proceedings on 4 and 6 March (https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3540/stages/18512). All were Government defeats.
The amendments would:

require compliance with international law
state that Rwanda is a safe country only if the arrangements in the Rwanda Treaty are fully implemented and adhered to, as judged by the Rwanda partnership’s independent monitoring committee
allow courts to challenge removal decisions on the basis of credible evidence that Rwanda is not a generally safe country
expand the grounds for individuals to challenge removal decisions and allow courts to grant injunctions against such removals
allow individuals to appeal decisions that they are over 18 and therefore eligible for removal to Rwanda
prevent some victims of human trafficking or modern slavery from being removed to Rwanda
prevent those who had helped the UK Government or military in an “exposed or meaningful manner” from removal to Rwanda
require the Government to give information to Parliament on who they plan to remove to Rwanda, the timetable for removals, and arrangements for people not granted asylum but not due to be removed to Rwanda
==============

The Lords will stretch this out

Do you happen to have room for a few hundred alleged American Democrats?
