New Liberal 'online harms' bill to make online hate punishable up to life in prison

Bill C-63 aims to force social media, user-uploaded adult content and live-streaming services to reduce exposure to online content deemed harmful

OTTAWA — The federal government tabled its long-awaited online harms bill on Monday which is already shaping up to become a delicate political battle over freedom of expression on the internet, while also aiming to provide more protections for children.

Bill C-63 aims to force social-media, user-uploaded adult content and live-streaming services to reduce exposure to online content deemed harmful, to strengthen the reporting of child pornography and to better address hate propaganda and provide recourse to victims of hate online.
It also amends the Criminal Code to create a new standalone hate crime offence that would allow penalties up to life imprisonment to deter hateful conduct, as well as raise the maximum punishments for hate propaganda offences from five years to life imprisonment for advocating genocide.

 In the USA, usually "tabled" means postponed to put aside, as withdrawn, at least temporarily. Is it the same in Canada?

In the USA, bills get "tabled" when it is clear that they don't have the support to pass.

What a stupid idea! Just about everyone online talks shit, and sometimes even call people names. This should never be passed. Folks need some kind of outlet where they can relieve their frustrations, so the internet SHOULD be the perfect, safe place to do that.

So I feel like we should all re read 1984, especially high school students to refresh our memories about what is happening right before our very eyes. But also to look for the part where Orwell predicted that Canada would become of a barometer of controllism, a canary in the coal mine of western civilization. He got everything else right, except the date, so this warning is probably in there somewhere.
I have always said the unimaginable. Hate is NOT a crime. assault, truly inciting riot, harassment, these things are crimes. We have a system that takes motive into account in sentencing.
For example, the crime is unprovoked attack on a man. In one case it was because you have solid reason to believe he harmed your child in the past. In another simply because of the color of his shin. Same crime, probably different sentences
But hate = a crime? What's next? Lust? Non-Wokness?
