The expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) across London can go ahead after the High Court ruled it lawful.

Five Conservative-led councils had challenged the Labour mayor of London's plans to charge older, more polluting vehicles £12.50 a day from 29 August.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan told the BBC: "This landmark decision is good news as it means we can proceed with cleaning up the air in outer London."

Surrey Council's leader branded the decision "incredibly disappointing.

The judge, Mr Justice Swift, said the mayor's expansion decision "was within his powers".

He wrote: "Having carefully considered the decision published for the purposes of consultation, I'm satisfied sufficient information was provided to permit this wanting to respond to the consultation to provide informed responses.

"I'm further satisfied that when taking the decision on the grant to meet the cost of the vehicle scrappage scheme, the mayor understood the likely provision that would be made.

"While the consultation conducted was not in-depth, it was lawful.

I’ve worked in central London, in fact I’ve worked nearly everywhere in London over the past 40 odd years.
The air quality is terrible, the vehicle fumes you can see in the horizon hanging there suffocating the lungs.
Once at the New LAMDA building high on the roof I had to work, my lungs were hurting for over a month….it’s real, the restrictions and banning of the combustion engine must end, they are killing people.

The Greater Londoner doesn’t own a motor, public transport buses and the tube (subway) carries most people across London.
Trin…….Greater London has the orbital M25 motorway encircling it. It’s feeds London with workers from outside London.
These are the people the taxation will hit, Travellers into Greater London.

The M25 was designed as an orbital motorway to feed London traffic around the capital and infiltrate easily.

By the way I’ll be on the dreaded M25 on Monday :( to Gillingham.

i would venture to say that ALL cities in the 3.8 million square miles of the US run on gasoline and diesel. the whole work ethic and supply chains are defined by transportation. people's lives depend on it. take it away and things would collapse very quickly. anyway it was a thought that i had today .. just one man's opinion.

I understand completely. But! The quality of life for the inhabitants of London, Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, and other huge cities is pretty poor, the exhaust fumes are really bad and killing people slowly.

I’ve got a perfectly good 20 year old gas guzzler myself. If I had a tax break I’d buy summat more suitable for city driving.

At one time London was known as "Foggy London Town" because of the heavy fog and smog that engulfed the city. Much of that went away when they stopped burning soft coal, the cause of the fog. London is like LA with its smog problem. The LA basis has had a smog issue since mankind first moved into the area and cooked its meals over open flies. The issue is the mountains on one side and the ocean on the other trapping the smoke and now auto exhaust in the basin. The only way it can ever be completely corrected is for humans to move out of LA

London faces the same geographical issues as LA and banning cars will not end London's air quality problems

Aside from this, this gives Starmer a massive headache, The Labour party recently failed to taker a seat in a London borough, Uxbridge, because of this exact issue, the Labour candidate declined to oppose ULEZ, wheras the Tory candidate won, even tho the people hate the Tories, because he promised to oppose ULEZ. It showed beyond doubt that Khans ULEZ is a vote killer, and if he goes ahead, millions of people will decline to vote Labour at the next election. What makes it worse is the deputy leader of Labour, Angela Rayner, let slip in an interview that a large chunk of the Labour Party want to roll ULEZ zones out to cities all over UK. This admission might be enough to put off millions of Labour city voters, and its the cities that vote Labour.

Starmer cant admit the plan to roll ULEZ across UK, and he needs Khan to drop the idea or its electoral suicide for them as proven in Uxbridge

2030 is the cut off for making new petrol and diesel engined cars, add another 10 years plus before the need for motorists to buy an electric car. So….on the fac3 of it 17 years minimum

The people of Uxbridge hate the tories, but they hate ULEZ even more, if labour back Ulez across the uk, as angela rayner let slip, its an election loser for them in big cities. And itll be an election loser for khan.

Just move to rural Lincolnshire, theres nothing big enough to ULEZ. Have a look on the map at Gedney Drove End or Antons Gowt

(For our American readers, a 'Gowt' is a medieval dutch word for a wide land drain that forms a navigible exit to the sea. There is a lock there built in 1632. The Gowt forms the confluence of all the "reens" , a dutch word for 'drainage ditches', and carries the marsh water out to sea. Reen has the same root as 'rhine' , as in the german river)

Good God no, I worked there a few years ago, it's a desolate place, it's grim, that's why they named a place "Grimsby"

Wrong end , try the south end, like I suggested, but staying away from Boston and Stickney. Its rural remote, and you'll never see a ULEZ or JSO protester ever. The cockerels crow in the morning, the birds sing, the ducks and swans swim lazily down the river, and nothing disturbs the peace. The north end of Lincolnshire is entirely different to the Wash

Lade Bank, this is about as rural and remote as you can get this side of Hadrians Wall

You're an authoritarian in the vein of a mediaeval monarch.

The hosts on GB News are talking about this a lot; how it hurts commuters and harms people who can't bear ever-increasing costs (everyone but the rich) AND there's another heating crisis (high bills) coming this winter and nothing's been done about it. Also, Sunak wanting to put money in N.Atl oil/gas. A lot to dig into here.

Elections coming in a year or so? Planned elections I think?

So it seems to me as an outsider, to be this way:

Labour = unions for working class (good-ish) but debilitating taxes, fees, fines, regulations, physical restrictions and climate change bullshite.

Tories = conservatism lite (Boris) to solid (like Farage) that hasn't convinced the People they're on their side and squishy on conservatism, too something:dontknow::thinking: to really fight for it.

Result, the stoic but increasingly resentful middle class doesn't trust either side.

I'm prolly wrong.
I'm an interested party.

Pretty much. Labour is 50 percent centre left Blairites and 50 percent hard core Marxists. There exist a group called Momentum which is hard core woke Marxists. Starmer cant ignore then, because they could split the party, but then Starmer also knows people are sick of wokery so he cant be seen to be on thier side. Dont trust Starmer, he might have a Sir before his name and been Director of Public prosecutions, but he also knelt for BLM , and is a woke and lefty as they come. 30 years ago the Blairites were indistinguishable from Thatcherites. Labour are in the hands of the ecoloons and unions, both fund them. Dale Vince, a vegan owner of Forest Green Rovers Football Club, has given the party £360,000 since the last election via his Ecotricity power company. He also funds Just Stop Oil, because obviously he has a vested interest in getting rid of fossil fuels.

Sunak is a bit slow off the mark here, but he clicked on that opposing net Zero and the war on motorists might be a vote winner. I suspect hes building up the election war chest so there can be a big election giveaway the month or two before;.

No can do. It won't allow you to skip a question and many are misleading. To give one example example:

Should abortion be allowed only to save the life of the mother?

If I answer truthfully, NO, than am I in favor of unlimited abortions or do I believe that there should be additional exceptions e.g. rape, or do I believe that all abortions should be banned?

Some questions are clearcut but far too many are:
