People hesitate to intervene when its a person in trouble whether its a begger on the street or the lady that was screaming for help as she was being killed last week in NYC. Leave a baby in a car and people will stand around wondering where the mom is and what to do and they eventually call 911.

But when a dog is in trouble by the side of the road, abandoned, lost, people stop and help. If a dog is being beaten, people intervene. Leave a dog in the car on a hot day and the car window gets smashed.

The difference in a majority of instances listed is 'choice'. Animals - pets, specifically - are dependent on humans. Adult humans have the freedom of choice and are expected (generically) to own/deal with the consequences of their choices.

The same people who would bust a cars window to save a dog, would also bust a cars window to save a child.

But, provoking the truckers into an emotional response does not negate that the convoys and their supporters have been peaceful.
