I was with the 3rd Air Force at S. Ruislip in the 50's, but lived in Ealing, W.5, then transferred to the RAF station at Bushy park (Eisenhower's old WWII headquarters during operation 'Overlord.' During that time I lived in East Molesey, Surrey, across from Hampton Court Palace.

Most probably the oldest 'mucker' in these environs. I was never aware of any water works. East Molseley was as pristine as the grounds of Hampton Court Palace and Bushy Park in my time. I miss the good times and the friends that we established there, some of which have since passed on. :sad20:

But a little further away I was working at Sheerwater near Woking.

How to make a perfect mug of tea.

Put a tea bag in a mug, pour boiled water i3/4 into the mug.

Just leave the mug alone..... just leave it, don’t stir it... leave it alone for exactly 4 minutes.

We call tea making “a brew” we let the leaves brew in the hot water, if you stir the tea bag it will disturb the teabag making it cloudy. Just leave it. After 4 minutes take out the tea bag, add a bit of skimmed milk or full milk whichever is your choice, sugar if you want but I take mine without sugar.
A perfect cup of tea.

Speaking of brewing English tea. When I lived there they made it the old fashioned English way, no tea bags! What happened?

One afternoon I had some guest over to my flat for 'high tea', I pulled a tea bag from my porcelain tea service, and they were SHOCKED, they thought it was a dead mouse. :smiley20:

Yes I can quite imagine, tea bags took a while to get used to. My Victorian mother resisted teabags until her twin sister persuaded her to buy some, it was a relief to me as a young lad cos I hated tea leafs occasionally floating round in a cup.

I drink coffee now, instant at work, percolated at home, the northern wife in true Brit housewifery style still brews up, she will make a tea every hour or so at home, that’s fine by me, it keeps me hydrated I suppose.

Ah...me thinks you've hit the nail on the head about the age-old question...is it more important HOW someone communicates or WHAT is communicated, and I've given this a lot of thought for a few years even and have yet to arrive at a solid opinion. In some cases, WHAT is being said is way more important (think sending fast message concerning a life-saving effort) compared to the HOW the urgent message is transcribed, while other times the HOW is more significant (think Hillary Clinton saying one thing while thinking the exact opposite) but she convinces her supporters she's on the up and up.

Many people do judge others by their grammar, but I'm still unsure about which matters most in today's political arena. We have unscrupulous types using the HOW aspect as much as the WHAT aspect to deliver their political statements in order to gain votes in a dishonest fashion. In a perfect world, we'd care little about the HOW because all statements would be accurate without deception.

"conversation"
"converse"

it seems it was too difficult for some to ascertain the correct usage for the above 2 words, so a new one has been added to our english lexicon,,,"conversate" that combines both into one new slang term...[so new, spell check doesn't recognize it yet]...

"borrow"
"lend"

its also painfully obvious many people do not know the difference between those 2 words.

you cant "borrow to" someone...

you can borrow "from" them, but never "to" them...

i see far too often people saying they "borrowed them the money"...:geez:

English rules are white man's rules. I've heard "conversate" used by white people at work but my bet is that it originated in urban America. Eventually, the dictionaries bow to the black man and legitimize those words. Can we race to the bottom any faster?

Any star trek fans here?

"No kill I"

A deadly creature writes that on the ground. Kirk and his merry men are puzzled. Does it mean the creature won't kill any more? Or is it a request to Kirk not to kill it?

Without agreement on the "how", the "what" will often be lost.

True. But in the model of condensation, condense, condensate...."conversate" would almost make sense as a noun and to refer to the substance of a conversation.

But ... nope... the morons use it as a verb.

Um, er, do you routinely refer to yourself as 'poofter'? NTTAWWT.

All southerners are referred to by northerners as southern poofters, of course this is taken with a pinch of salt by us folk south of the Humber.

We on the other hand refer to northerners as northern scum, or northern bastards, “whippet fanciers” “Clog hoppers” any derogatory usage refers to the northern filth.

Well. Objective reality is a rare diamond, wildflower. Many don't even experience it.

lol Is The War Nerd still blogging? I used to read his stuff a few years ago for a week or two, then quit checking back on him.

Lol on edit:

eXile.[19] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dolan_(writer)#cite_note-19) Researchers of the original Wikipedia Gary Brecher page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Gary_Brecher#Look_what_I_found!) found the photo[20] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dolan_(writer)#cite_note-nerdRoger-20) on which the illustration at the top of each War Nerd column, supposedly representing Brecher, was based. It was actually that of Roger Edvardsen the tour manager of the Norwegian rhythm & blues band Ehem.[21] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dolan_(writer)#cite_note-21) One of the page authors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Gary_Brecher#Look_what_I_found!) emailed the band, and they confirmed the image was of Edvardsen.[20]

War Nerd writingsEvery two to five weeks, Brecher published his War Nerd column in The eXile (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_eXile). In each installment, Brecher offered his idiosyncratic analyses of armed conflict from a military, political, or (rarely) social standpoint. In his first eXile column, Brecher declared that The War Nerd was to be "a column on how all the wars are going, kind of a war reviewer." He has since migrated to the subscription-only Radio War Nerd podcast,[6] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dolan_(writer)#cite_note-Dolan_RWN-6)

You can drain your dick at every bondage site on the web, but you can't really drain your head there, it takes something bigger like a decent war and some of those guncamera shots. I figure about one a year. Which is why this was already a good year."[citation needed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)] Following publication of Brecher's article, "Victor Hanson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Davis_Hanson): Portrait of an American Traitor", Hanson responded with an article accusing Brecher of being an anarchist (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchy).[26] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dolan_(writer)#cite_note-26)
In the September 9, 2005 of The eXile, the editors announced that the War Nerd would be suspended without pay for one issue as a result of these accusations. It is doubtful that this was a serious reprimand. Nonetheless, the subsequent issue of The eXile did not contain Brecher's regular column. Another similarly themed Brecher article, "It's All Greek to Victor Davis Hanson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Davis_Hanson)", appeared in the December 19, 2005 issue of The American Conservative (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_American_Conservative).[27] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dolan_(writer)#cite_note-27)
Brecher has summarized his view of modern warfare as follows:

Most wars are asymmetrical/irregular.
In these wars, the guerrillas/irregulars/insurgents do not aim for military victory.
You cannot defeat these groups by killing lots of their members. In fact, they want you to do that.
Hi-tech weaponry is mostly useless in these wars.
"Hearts and minds," meaning propaganda and morale, are more important than military superiority.
Most people are not rational, they are TRIBAL: "my gang yay, your gang boo!" It really is that simple. The rest is cosmetics.[28] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dolan_(writer)#cite_note-28)

All they do is show up as blue letters in my browser; they are to the footnotes at the bottom of the page... Are they automatically opening in others browsers? There is a setting to not allow that in many browsers. I don't see an option to post as 'plain text'; I'll try and find one. Is it the 'Unlink' button in the ;Reply' box?

Tried it again and all I get is a 'Copy' option when I right click

I have the latest Firefox, and no such options exists in the right click menu, just one 'Copy' function. And most of the links are on the same page as the link; they're to the footnotes.

I have not.

Scotland and wales are great tourist destinations. Great views and things to see.

However! Apart from the big cities like Cardiff , Swansea, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen there is for a word…. Nothing.
Its basically only English taxation money keeping these 10 million people from stealing our sheep and cows again.
55 million English basically keeping them afloat.

Spot on!

What I mean is about Scotland and Wales there is not a lot of industry, sparsely populated and very very reliant on England for our economy.
The Scottish SNP government will put a vote for leaving the union again. How this will go will be the same as the last vote…. Narrowly voting to stay in the union. The reason? A normal Scot who pays Tax will ultimately know a leave vote will increase his tax. At the same time the community charges will surge upwards year after year as soon as the U.K. subsidies start to disappear. Basically there are not enough people to pay tax for health, and other governmental services.
That is my prognostication

Neo

Now there's some history !! I wish I understood what you mean better. I think it's interesting.
Look at this map.

Scotland is north. Wales is West.

Scotland has 5million, Wales has 5 million

Scotland is bigger and the big cities have the major population, the rest spread out thinly all over.
Wales on the other hand is smaller but again the population are in the bigger towns and cities.

Now take a look at England with all the counties and shires, my Area is the south West, heavily industrialised just like the rest of England.
We are a powerhouse economy, Scotland unfortunately isn’t on the same page.
Only 2.5 million pay any taxation, of that only 400,000 pay the 40%tax that means they pay 40% tax on anything over £40,000 they earn a year.
