    Gun grab nets 26,000 guns

    Of course Hilary Clinton approves.

‘Amnesty’ turn-in nets 26K firearms so farBy Dave Workman for Liberty Park Press
Australians threatened with lengthy jail sentences and heavy fines have been turning in thousands of firearms since July 1 in a “gun amnesty” program aimed at getting rid of unregistered guns, an idea so offensive to American gun owners that when Hillary Rodham Clinton mentioned Aussie gun laws on the campaign trail, it became an issue that cost her votes.
The government has given Aussie gun owners until Sept. 30 to turn in their unregistered guns. According to the BBC Friday, the take so far has been “nearly 26,000” firearms. Among them, according to a related report on ABC.net, are historic firearms that had been used in WWI and II, and the Vietnam war.
The ABC story noted that more than 13,460 guns had been surrendered in New South Wales, with another 7,000 turned in by gun owners in Queensland. Other states have seen fewer guns, but the roundup is definitely on.
The New York Times recently reported that the amnesty “allows people to hand unwanted or unregistered firearms over to the police and to licensed firearm dealers without fear of prosecution. Ordinarily, the possession of an unregistered firearm can bring a fine of up to 280,000 Australian dollars ($220,000) or 14 years in jail.
But is that an honest assessment? This program doesn’t “allow” anything. It essentially requires such gun surrenders under threat of fine and imprisonment. And many of the firearms being surrendered are “rubbish guns,” according to Philip Alpers, a University of Sidney associated professor quoted by the NY Times.
“I would suspect the great majority of guns that have been surrendered are long guns, which have very little value to their owners and even less value to criminals,” Alpers said.
But in an article released by the National Rifle Association, Prof. Alpers reportedly “expressed disdain” for the current gun turn-in project.

Australian Gun Grab in the Form of Gun Amnesty
The increased threat of terrorism and a flood of illegal firearms into Australia have prompted the government to offer its first national gun amnesty since a massacre at a former penal colony more than 20 years ago. In 1996, 35 people were killed by a lone gunman at Port Arthur in Tasmania. That tragedy prompted tough gun control measures, VOA reported.
Firearms, including The right to bear arms are listed as a subsection of fighting terrorism on the NSW police website
It is estimated there are more than a quarter-million illegal guns in Australia. An amnesty has been declared that will give Australians the chance to hand in their unwanted weapons without fear of prosecution. Anyone caught with an illegal weapon outside that period face fines of up to $212,000 or up to 14 years in prison according to the VOA report.
A person must not possess or use a firearm, prohibited firearm or pistol unless the person is authorised to do so by a licence or permit. From the national police website.
National Firearms Agreement dictates that a person who possesses or uses a firearm must have a firearm licence. Licence holders must be at least 18 years of age, have a “genuine reason” for holding a firearm licence and must not be a “prohibited person”. All firearms in Australia must be registered by serial number to the owner, who also holds a firearms licence.
Australian Justice Minister Michael Keenan says a deadly siege at a cafe in downtown Sydney in December 2014, the murder of a police accountant in Sydney a year later, and a fatal shootout this month in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton are evidence that an amnesty is needed the VOA report stated.
“Well, it brings certainly into mind the importance of doing this. I mean, we know the Lindt Cafe siege an illegal firearm [was used]; the murder of Curtis Cheng, an illegal firearm [was used]. It is yet to be determined some of the aspects of Brighton, but obviously we would expect the same. So clearly the fact that we have a deteriorating national security environment, got an environment where there has been five terror attacks on our soil, and, sadly, in the vast majority of those cases, it has been an illegal firearm that has been used.”
    Amnesty ‘wont stop terror threat’
The vice-president of Gun Control Australia, Roland Browne, said the amnesty would not do anything to combat terrorism according to ABC Australian news who quoted Browne:
“Amnesties are good in the sense that they take guns out of the hands of the community who don’t need them and that’s especially helpful in the case of suicide. But if you are dealing with people who are hellbent in causing terror, they are not going to hand in their guns.
“Introducing an amnesty is an easy fix, it is not a backwards step, but it is not actually solving the problem and the problem is guns moving out of the hands of legal users into those who shouldn’t have them. There are too many instances of gun thefts of 10, 12, 15 guns at a time. People do not need that number of guns in their homes,” he said.
