Pit Boss is very political in a business sense with a high turnover. On a good night my daughter goes home with $75 or $80 for sports bar tips in Vegas. Course there are bad nights when she get next to nothing. She gets a wage that is better then H&R Block pays which is about $10 an hour. Yes she could get commissions in addition but I couldn't talk her into going into business taxes, which is where the money is. Anybody who just gets a W2 can just go out and pay a $50 software package and do it themselves for less the H&R charges.

    Just my thoughts:

I believe that the unions are the one's to push for the minimum wage going up. They want to bring the service industry into the union umbrella. The problem is that fast food & other businesses in that line have some of the lowest profit margins around. Their big "money" comes from volume. A $15 minimum wage kills many of them so to survive they have to cut hours & the number of workers. Unions also missed the crucial point that unlike something like waste disposal where people have to use those companies, people do not have to eat out. Higher prices means less volume & then add in higher wages & the business is screwed. Unions are just like democrats in that both of them seem to believe that businesses are rich & have huge amounts of money that can be taken from them. From a businessman's perspective who would want to buy a McDonalds franchise for a million dollars & then only end up making $5,000 per month? That's stupid math & it doesn't work for someone wanting to make money.

And once again we have someone pushing something built on faulty logic. A minimum wage of $15 per hour in NY or LA means that your below the poverty line. In Podunk Tx & other state it could mean that your making a hell of a good living. So that 15 per hour doesn't do what they say it would do in the first place. It's just another anti business rule that they are trying to put into place because everybody believes that businesses are evil & make huge money.

Well said @Old Tex. You laid out the salient points of why mandating a minimum wage doesn't work, ever.

The average wage for a front desk clerk in Las Vegas is $20,200 a year that works out to $9.71 assuming 52 weeks at 40 hours a week. Most probably don't work 40 hours a week.

What @RobertLafollet is saying is that free-market competition for labor causes wage offers to float in response to the needs of the employers and the availability of labor, hence making the minimum wage a complete idiotic idea.

This must be a new-hire Robertlafollet, who has been poorly trained in the Wonders of Government and doesn't realize that free-market advocacy is going to get him put back out on the street.

    Possibly with bruises.

The interesting this when comparing socialism & capitalism is this. Anybody has a chance to become rich under capitalism. Think about it, the guy that invented the Chia-pet became a millionaire.

On the other hand under socialism only criminals & politicians can become rich. And if you think about it, that means there's only 1 job that you can do to become rich (politicians are criminals).

Hopefully Robert has his daughter giving half of that to the democratic party. That will help her understand what's going to happen if they take over.

Well, that's a good reason why people should, when they are young and in the care of their parents, take jobs that will let them earn skills that will lift them out of the minimum wage, because nobody ever said earning a living was supposed to be easy.

If they can't cut it on a job their employer wants to pay them, they should regret not learning something useful when they were younger. Nobody owes them a living, but you can always throw your money away on charity if you want to help them.

but you can always throw your money away on charity if you want to help them.

Once I got to where I could help, I started giving money to charity. (Actually I always gave something, later in life I just gave more). Now days who would I give to? The medical research company that gets 5% of what I give? The soup kitchen that feeds people so that they can spend more money for drugs? And so on & so on. It seems that at best my money gives people help very short term & teaches them that help is always around the corner.

Liberals would say (while they were giving my money) that it's needed because people will die without it. Well not everyone gets help & oddly enough I can't remember the last dead body that I had to step over.

A friend and I were coming out of a convenience store (back when I could walk), and I was approached by a panhandler. He asked me for a dollar. As I reached into my pocket for the dollar, my friend, A CONSERVATIVE also, said, "Wait a minute . . . all he's going to do is take your dollar and go into the store and buy a beer. Why don't you offer to buy him a sandwich?"

Hmmmmmm . . . that made sense to me.

So, I looked at the panhandler, and said, "Tell you what, I'll give you MORE than a dollar. I'll go into the store with you and buy you a meal"

The panhandler looked at me with a scowl, uttered a vulgarity, and went on to the next patron looking for that dollar to buy his beer.
