    Godzilla has died!

Actually it was Haruo Nakajima, Man Inside Godzilla Suit, who has died at 88

The man behind the monster has died: Haruo Nakajima, who wore the Godzilla bodysuit for every “Godzilla” film from the original to 1972’s “Godzilla vs. Gigan,” has died at 88.
Japanese movie major Toho confirmed Nakajima’s death. But it said that it had no plans to release a statement.
Nakajima’s career began in samurai and war films, notably “Seven Samurai” by Akira Kurosawa and “Eagle of the Pacific.” He landed the “Godzilla” role starting with 1954’s “Godzilla, King of the Monsters,” directed by Ishiro Honda.

Sorry to here it. 1954 Godzilla is one of my favorites. By the way there is a Japanese version without Raymond Burr who also did a great job in FT. Larime and the US version where he was dubbed in.

I'm surprised there aren't more responses. Godzilla is iconic!
Besides which, did you read where Haruo's costume was made out of cement?! Can you imagine how heavy and HOT that had to be??

Oh, btw... Learned from my daughter that there's this new rage going on since...? Not sure. Before summer began, anyway. The 'cool' thing for people do is to go into stores - wherever - and go on about their business as if there's nothing unusual...about them being dressed as a tyrannosaurus rex. Hysterical!

Heard on the tube this morning, the suit he wore got up to 140 degrees inside. Damn!

    Godzilla Died!

Haruo Nakajima, who played the original 1954 Godzilla, dies
He stomped over miniature bridges and buildings in a rubber suit and gave the world Godzilla, the fire-breathing, screeching monster that became Japan's star cultural export and an enduring symbol of the pathos and destruction of the nuclear age.

Haruo Nakajima, who portrayed Godzilla in the original 1954 classic, died Monday of pneumonia, his daughter Sonoe Nakajima told The Associated Press on Tuesday. He was 88.

The film, which went on to become a mega-series and inspired Hollywood spinoffs, struck a chord with postwar Japan, the only nation in the world to suffer atomic bombing, in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the closing days of World War II.
Vivacious and energetic, Nakajima said he invented the character from scratch, and developed it by going to a zoo to study how elephants and bears moved. He said it was important to show the pathos of the creature, which could only smash everything in its way.

The theme of his Godzilla was grand and complex, he said, addressing universal human problems, as it spoke to a Japan that still remembered wartime suffering.

"If Godzilla can't walk properly, it's nothing but a freak show," Nakajima said in a 2014 interview with the AP at his suburban Tokyo apartment, proudly sitting among sepia-toned photos of him as a young man and Godzilla figures.

"It's not some cowboy movie," he said.

He recalled that the rubber suit he wore was so hot, especially under the glaring lights of the movie set, that the sweat he wrung from his shirt would fill half a bucket.

In the original movie, directed by Ishiro Honda with an unforgettable score by Akira Ifukube, Godzilla surfaces from the Pacific Ocean suddenly, a mutation as a result of nuclear testing in the area.

Nakajima was a stunt actor in samurai films when he was approached to take the role of Godzilla. Some fans prefer Nakajima's version over some Hollywood depictions, which they say resemble an evil-looking animal.

Although recent Godzilla films use computer graphics, the latest Japanese
Godzilla remake, released last year, went back to using a human actor, Mansai
Nomura, a specialist in the traditional theater of Kyogen. His movements were duplicated on the screen through "motion capture" technology.

Until recently, Nakajima had continued to be a star guest at festivals and events.

He had been scheduled to be featured at the Tokyo International Film Festival in October.

"I am the original, the real thing," he said in 2014. "My Godzilla was the best."

CGI had put him out of a job anyway.

I think being 88 put him out of work long ago, regardless. Have to be fairly athletic to caper in a rubber suit.

War, Installing fear, Survival, and many other things in life......ARE all about illusions. Cutting the shapes or forms of guard shacks, tanks, mobile equipment out of cardboard.....so at night it looks like something that is really not there....or does not exist - as to give the enemy the illusion of a presence or a specific strength so that you may force them to perform and event, something you predict - as to overcome and win over the enemy. OR DECIMATE them !

Illusionist on TV like Cris Angel, David Copperfield and others are all just.......illusionist, but they are good at it.

CGI sucks. There is a falsity to it that is worse in my opinion than the guys in monster suits. Back in the day people "driving in a car" in the movies had to make you kind of ignore the background running in the rear window that never matched up to the drivers hands on the wheel, they had to act, and make you believe they were the private eye Sam Malone or the FBI agent tracking the mobster.

Today all an actor has to do is make sure all their teeth are white and straight along with wearing whatever has been deemed to be the new fashion trend and regurgitate a few lines as the CGI runs behind them trying in vain to make you believe they are who they claim to be on screen.

I started watching "skyfall" and it started out decent enough, but between the jumping off a "crumbling" roof just in time, then reaching a helicopter just in time to grasp with fingertips and get in, then breaking the grip of the bad guy and reaching the controls just in time to start the opening credits, I was done didn't even bother watching the rest of the (I am sure) 2 1/2 hr Bond romp.

"Hello all".......I would have said "good evening ladies and gents", but you all know what you are.......Moe Howard
(what I'm sure was an inside joke to all the Hollyweird actors in the scene at the time, as Hollywood was Weinstein before Weinsten ever was)
