Maryland: Ship hits Francis Scott Key Bridge causing it to collapse

The Francis Scott Key Bridge along I-695 in Maryland collapsed into the Baltimore harbor early Tuesday morning following a "ship strike," Maryland transportation officials said.
A livestream of the bridge appeared to show a cargo ship colliding with a support beam, causing the bridge to break and fall into the Patapsco River. Multiple vehicles were on the bridge at the time.

The ship that hit the bridge is the Dali. A Singapore flagged container ship bound for Sir Lanka. It was under the control of two local pilots at the time of the collision. I'd imaging a sudden loss of steering caused the incident.

The video looked like a direct hit. Circumstances look like a very bad accident.

Hopefully all ship board personnel are OK and able to cooperate with authorities.

This is where the USA needs to shine and get this bridge rebuilt in a timely manner.

Another video shows the ship losing power then regaining it only to lose it again. With no power, all those containers on deck and a fairly strong SW wind, it blew the ship right into the pylon.

The original build took five years. And they have a lot of cleanup to do before they can start a rebuild now!

Coincidently, it took 5 years to rebuild the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Florida. A picture at the link shows the structures at the water level which are in place now to protect it from a future strike.

the way it looks .. that bridge was not very stable anyway. 47 degree water .. so sad for the workers that went in .. even if they lived long enough to hit the water.
