    now that i think about it....i don't think there were many customers in that store either, were there? They probably have to charge that to pay their employee.

    I had sticker shock when I visited Catalina Island some years ago. The only two groceries in Avalon are run by Vons (very small Vons). Everything has to be shipped over the ocean and that costs money. Also the only grocery in town.

    We've got the same problem on Fire Island ,the barrier beach off long Island . Everything gets shipped by ferry and the price automatically doubles - it's supply and demand and the pricing is what the consumer will pay . Some of those prices in the video weren't too bad btw . The toilet paper worked out to a buck and change per roll and was reasonable .

    Been there. I spent a summer in Cordova, Alaska - at a time when there were no roads running in and out. My understanding is that a highway (road) has since been opened, on an old railroad bed.

    EVERYTHING came up by barge from Seattle. Including diesel fuel for the generator on the edge of town - which is how they got their electric power. Prices were 5x what they were in Seattle at the time.

    Part of that is the cost. As much, it's supply-and-demand...high wages, mean competition for a lot of things, and the high bidder gets it. Paid a lot, spend a lot. Back in those days, you could bank a little, too, and it would be 5x when you moved back down Stateside.

    Now, of course, you lose money in savings (interest paid is less than inflation) and there's no safe investment with strong returns. So, there's no point dealing with the hellish winters and the summer mosquitoes, big enough to carry off babies...to make a lot more of that Federal Reserve scrip which they're just printing and handing out to the Banksters, anyway.

    No, retiring there is not a good idea, Neo. Although there are some marginalized conservatives in the States who have that fantasy...
