    Ah The Lethernecks

United States Marine Corps celebrated their 240th Birthday this week. Famed Leathernecks, Devil Dogs, China Marines - who always win and never leave their comrades dead on a battlefield. We honor and celebrate their service from America's earliest days to today.

With all the honor speeches going around, thought I would interject a bit of humor into the group with an old, old Marine joke.

When Congress gave the very first Marine his commission, he was sent to Boston Harbor to board a newly built Frigate ship. The job of the Marines in those early sailing days was as sharpshooters from the rigging in close side to side battles and canon barrages of two ships fighting against each other.

Well, the first Marine reported to his ship, showed his commision to the Captain, who said he didn't have any idea what the Marine was supposed to do, but told him to go to the front of the ship and wait on some straw bales, where he sat for hours observing ship activity in port.

Later in the day, another Marine arrives, showed his commision from Congress to the Captain, who told him to join his comrade in the front of the ship.

So the second U.S. Marine joined the first, where they sat silently for an hour or so. Eventually, the second Marine asked the first one, "what the heck are we supposed to be doing?"

The first U.S. Marine remarked, "damned if I know, but you should have been here in the old days."

Being in the Air Force as you know there was always a good bit of, well lets call it banter back & fourth between us & the marines. I even had a few marine friends that I would joke with. But I'll say this, If I were ever in trouble for any reason I would love to have a marine at my side. To me it doesn't matter as much about how old the corps is, what matters is that they are still turning out (more than any other service) real men who both love & will fight for their country. I have the utmost respect for the marines.

Along with the most decorated U.S. Marine in history, Chesty Puller, who in World War I, when the Marines were placed in the trench lines to stymie the major German offensive they hoped would end the war, turned directly on the spot where the Marines were positioned. The French General in charge of the troops, seeing the massive German offensive bearing down on the Marines line, told them to retreat. Puller's response? "Retreat hell, we just got here." The Marines admired the precision and order of the German troops attacking them............and shot them dead.

My favorite marine quote was I believe from Chesty Puller during Korea. He & his men had the enemy on all four side of them & he told his men that they are all around us. They can't get away now! That's the definition of having balls.
