To save your pics and documents, you can use a USB stick (they come in lots of sizes) easy to use, too. Or copy to an external hard drive. I'm running Win7 on one pc, Win8 on another. I never update either one; that is the FIRST thing I turn off when I get a new install.

It will keep working. But itís just opening you up to security risks. Especially if you use it for any business related stuff. For example, if you do any credit card processing, you could be fined because once Windows stops supporting a version, it doesnít meet security requirements for Visa or other card services. The other potential problem is if you run any other programs, they may build updates that make their programs incompatible with Win 7.

Also, something I just remembered, online banking or bill payment services may not let you access your accounts if you use an unsupported version of Windows.

understand that technically, the software will still work, but you are accepting some risks by continuing to use it

My PC is old and doesn't work like I think it should. I will be getting a new one for Christmas. Not sure of what I want yet.

Back in the 90's I wrote software as a hobby and started writing complex programs for auto repair shops and sold several copies of. Now, 23 years later it still works just fine. On win7 all you may have to do is re-install it at some point if it gets too stupid which it does sometimes, and at that point you need your data you want to keep backed up. They way I do it is i have two external hard drives that I copy stuff to that I don't want to lose. I never have trusted backup and restore programs that require a program to run them because I've had them fail a few times.

As far as security concerns software other than windows can address that issue.
No, the software will still work. But there will be no more patches or security fixes. At this point, Windows 7 becomes a big target for hackers and identity thieves. And other software will not address the security issues because once a version of Windows is no longer supported, other software companies also stop supporting their software for that version of Windows. Also, anti-virus software (which you shouldnít use anyway) does not secure holes in the operating system anyway. If a hacker finds a way to penetrate the outdated windows firewall, Norton isnít going to stop this.

That’s a good idea. You should also leave your car unlocked with the keys in it too.
