    October 17, 1989 - Loma Prieta Earthquake

It is the 30 year anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, a 6.5 magnitude shock that killed 63 people, injures thousands, and left parts of the Bay Area in rubble.

This was dubbed the "World Series Earthquake" because it was televised live by ABC during their pregame show of Game 3 of the 1989 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics. A section of the San Francisco Bay Bridge collapsed and entire sections of the Nimitz Freeway in West Oakland pancaked, accounting for the majority of event deaths. The Marina district in SF erupted in fire, and major damage was reported in Watsonville - a small town close to the epicenter of Loma Prieta Peak.

Below is the early media coverage by ABC (World Series) and KGO of the earthquake.

If the earthquake had made San Francisco an island, would that be a great loss?

I moved to Marin (2 miles north of SF) in 1992. We could not find a rental house prior to our search to buy a house, because all the displaced people had rented all available rentals. This was 2.5 years AFTER the quake! The SF Marina district was STILL under repair, and they were tearing down the double decker Embarcadero Highway that collapsed in the city. Eventually we found a rental and then a home to buy.

The next big one is going to decimate the city forever, and all those high tech companies are going to move out of state.
