Rep. Tlaib: Ban on Face Recognition Tech

Rashida Tlaib calls for ban on facial recognition tech after telling Detroit police to hire only black analysts

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., last week responded to backlash after she told Detroit police to hire only black facial recognition analysts, writing in a scathing op-ed that her comments were neither “racist” nor “inappropriate” and pushed further for a total ban of the technology used to identify criminal suspects.

“I’m going to call out every injustice I see. It’s probably what makes most people uncomfortable when I speak the truth,” Tlaib wrote in an op-ed in The Detroit News. “My comments weren’t racist, out of order, or “inappropriate.” It is inappropriate to implement a broken, flawed and racist technology that doesn’t recognize black and brown faces in a city that is over 80% black.”

“I was elected to serve my residents, and I cannot in good conscience sit by while inaccurate facial recognition technology is deployed in ways that run the risk of false arrests and over-policing,” she continued. “Facial recognition technology will have racist results and relying on human analysts for intervention is inadequate. We need to ban facial recognition.”

Detroit Police Chief James Craig, who is black, said last week that it was appalling for the Democratic “Squad” member to suggest that only black people should be hired as facial recognition analysts.

I told you here very public comments were not so stupid nor accidental. She wants to start a narrative of implied "racism" that will Ban the technology all together. The kind of technology that can be used against hard to identify terrorism suspects, violent left-wing protesters, and minority criminals in general.

Her behavior on the tour was horrible, and what she said was both stupid and racist. If she does not like facial recognition, she should have the courage to say so, and not disparage the people using the technology as unfit due to their race.

Every tool we give the government, the government has used against otherwise law-abiding citizens. I am afraid our government will use facial recognition, along with a "social score" to target "enemies" of the state, which soon will include the people we used to call patriots.

The Dems were the champions of the working men and women just a few short years ago, now they are the champions of lawlessness and law breakers. Their socialism demands any who oppose be labeled as hate groups, and opposing views are labeled hate speech. Antifa is their version of brown shirts, and censorship and corruption are their tools. They will either be full blown fascists or full blown communists before I die, and I don't want to give them any tools to beat me with.

Sorry, I hate to admit, but I may be with Tlaib with this issue. Like NSA gathering all of our data, facial recognition is just too much of an intrusion into the privacy of everyone, just to target a few bad guys. What a politician defines as a "bad guy" can be broad enough to include a political enemy, and I am not OK with that. I have visited the Utah NSA data storage center. I did not see the computer side, only the aux power side. If they need that much aux power as backup, I know they are storing way too much data.

Ummm.... anyone else think she might be too concerned that she wont be able to screech "RACISM" when the algorithm prints out the objective metrics that were used to declare the perp likely black .. or likely arab?

I can see how a supporter of terrorism would take issue with "facial recognition technology..."

(I can also see how she would have a problem with ANY cameras. Or mirrors, for that matter....)

Like it or not..... 21st century. Cameras. Images. Image analysis software. Questions about who done it.

Stopping the use of this technology is a futile endeavor. The best that can be hoped for is some limit on the types of crimes or even the purpose of the application of the technology. Ya know? Woman gets raped and killed. Cops have an image of his face. You have cameras up in the city. Do you look for the killer through the use of this technology?

On the other hand.... Woman is whistled at by guy passing by. Cops have an image of his face. 1) why do cops even have the image? 2) Do you find this guy and charge him with sexual harrassment?

I think this is all part of a larger picture like AOC and abolishing the prison system in this country. Let the criminal class lose for the Revolution and hinder the "racist" police from doing their job.

That could be part of it. But quite honestly..... AOC likely has trouble figuring out what to do at 4 way stops. So she is not doing the scheming . She MIGHT be taking up the banner of the incarcerated under the belief that they are all the equivalent of political prisoners...... simply oppressed by society and forced into a life of crime by ... privileged old white men.
But your point is well taken. The thugs would be easy to control with Democrat handouts and ra ra speeches about how they are just innocents caught up in a war against ... privileged old white men. And -being thugs - they could pick up where mom's basement dwelling antifa assholes fail. Antifa only punches. Prison thugs kill.... and thus can intimidate even more than Antifa.
