Cool We Need Each Other: Seniors Are Drawn to New Housing Arrangements

Older Americans are exploring housing alternatives, including villages and home-sharing.
And theyre not talking about the typical retirement home.
A primer: Shared housing matches people who have unused space with people who need housing; typically, at least one party is age 60 or older. Sometimes the arrangement involves simply rent and companionship, but sharers can also agree on lower rent in exchange for grocery shopping, dog walking, driving or other services.
Another way is Cohousing - A like-minded community forms, then looks into acquiring land and building a housing complex (or occasionally, converting a building) where members can live together.
Though their homes are smallish, residents also share a common house for communal meals, classes and meetings, plus gardens and outdoor walkways designed to encourage socializing.
The village movement, comprises 280 organizations in towns, cities, neighborhoods and even apartment complexes, and is growing by 20 percent a year, said Barbara Hughes Sullivan, national director of the Village to Village Network.

I live alone. In an apartment if I can. In a tent if I must.

    I share with NOBODY.

    Been there, done that.

People should be taking care of their elders.

That's how it's done everywhere else, and in my family as well.

Do they hunt bear and spear gators on your cousin's land?
All doorways, before going forward, should be looked to; for difficult it is to know where foes sit within a dwelling.

Same here although I do make exceptions for fine Latina women in this household.

My digs have certainly changed. Now that I'm single, I had to move into a huge rambling house that I was actually going to tear down. I'm renovating it, now. I do...and don't live by myself. I have my Grandpa wing...which is pretty big. The rest of the house...way bigger...has one guy there full time...BFF of my 26 year old youngest son. Most weekends...there are 5 or 6 kids hanging about. They don't get in my hair. The dog likes everyone, so.....
If you don't practice...you'll sound like it. And, if you don't tune, your life will sound like it, too. Listen to the intervals. That's where it all hides from you.....

What you have, is a rabbit-warren.

Which is great. You have your space; and then down the hall, the kids have their space, and common area. Kinda like a family-mall. It's all indoors, but you all have your quarters.

That's the best of both worlds. Seriously.

At first it sounds great but there could be complications - big disappointments. There's a lack of privacy and what if people get tired of each other? Of course, if someone can't afford their own home, renting a room is better than being homeless.

I was in a chat room once and the conversation turned to the philosophy of humans being social animals. I opined that people lived in communities mainly because it makes their lives easier and convenient.

One woman got very upset, and said something like "People are a convenience? You might as well call them garbage!"

I protested that wasn't my meaning, and that we have evolved to be socially connected because it brought us out of the hunter/gatherer times. She kept insisting that their had to be something more primal than that.

I guess that she was really emotionally attached to interpersonal relationships because she ended with, "I don't care what you say. I need people!"
