I have a friend who I am sure is a Democrat. I have several of those types and they know that I am a conservative. It must be my charming personality that keeps me in their good graces.

Today he told me that polls are showing anyone of the top 3 Democrat candidates to beat President Trump in 2020. He had two questions:

    1. Should President trump step down if the polls say he will lose?

    2. Has any sitting president not ran for re-election (either under the current 2 term rule or via the 2 term tradition)?

He asked me because I am somewhat knowledgeable about American political history. My first instinct was to assume that if it happened it was in the 19th century and I told him that I would have to do research.

Then I thought about it and remembered that Lyndon Johnson had refused to seek nomination in 1968.

Arguably, President Truman could qualify as a sitting president who did not run. He finished FDR's term and was elected in his own right, prior to the 22nd Amendment.

All doorways, before going forward, should be looked to; for difficult it is to know where foes sit within a dwelling.

I also told my friend that I was very skeptical about those polls, invoked the polls that had Hillary winning in 2016, and opined that Trump would be crazy to not seek re-election.

if the 2016 debacle taught us just one thing, [it taught us much, much more] its that polls are created to manipulate public opinion, not to represent actual numbers.

besides, if everyone around is crazy, that doesn't mean i'm going to follow suit.

    i have my own mind.

Was just about to quote your 1st post, then saw this one. I remember the NYT poll, for weeks it didn't move, except one time it moved about 1% or less in trump's favor, but that didn't last long. For weeks it stays the same. this is impossible, it has to increase/decrease, regardless of who it favors.

The way the media handled the election & this was a major red flag to me.
