    Solar panels

Who here owns them for a alternate power source for backup?

My only experience is my 250 watt panels mounted on my RV. If had to do it again I would have purchased the Zamp suitcase panels. Between the Honda generator and the panels it seems to work out really well.

I lost all my panels in a fire...32 x 180 watters. We have two, 3-phase 66 kvA Cummins diesel gensets. I swap between them with each oil change. There's enough diesel out here to run...in an emergency...for two years, running at diminished use...two months for normal.

If you don't practice...you'll sound like it. And, if you don't tune, your life will sound like it, too. Listen to the intervals. That's where it all hides from you.....

I'm thinking of getting a 350 watt panel. I have two group 29 batteries. One for the shop, the other for the TV It will run the TV for 2-3 hrs and a couple of fans all night. The panel will keep the batteries topped, (they are currently charged with UPS's whose batteries have died). Coupled with two cheap invertors. The UPS won't run the cable modem, and only power the stuff for half the time. The panel will also shade the roof. I'm still in the thinking stage as I need to figure out an articulating mount. The sun moves north of me for two months, is almost overhead for 2 more, and south for the rest.

    Solar scam

Elderly and the uneducated are being scammed all over the country to buy expensive solar panels for their homes. They replace their payment to the electric company (if they are lucky) with a payment to the finance company and are making solar purveyors wealthy. Many are sold lower payments by utilizing a 30% tax rebate that they cannot even take advantage of because they pay little or no tax. They find this out later.

I can see this happening, my intent was not for the home but for camping. If the power goes out here the wife and I just jump into our camper and ride out the blackout.

Living in Florida I get bombarded by offers for solar panels.

I have two neighbors that bought into the hype and both got screwed. A few tips, if you live in an area where tropical storms/hurricanes are an every year threat, don't let them attach this crap to your roof. Oh and before getting solar panels installed, check with your homeowner's insurance first, lol.

Bottom line, you are buying Chinese crap, and you won't save any money.

Cheaper and more efficient to have a gas generator.

There are definitely excellent uses for solar and yours is one of them.

I was just saying because I am aware of the widespread sales abuse with regard to solar........

Noise issue even with my Honda generator, when we camp it is in BLM or State public lands far away from any people or modern Glampground resorts.
