    English football team goes vegan

English football (what we would call soccer in the United States) team Forest Green Rovers plays home games in Gloustershire, England. They recently acquired a new owner.

In English football, it is common for supporters to consume meat pies either during the game or at halftime. British law does not allow for alcohol consumption during game play, so fans will often rush the concession stands before the game or at halftime for a "pie and pint", the pint being ale, stout, bitter, or some other type of English beer.

This new owner of Forest Green Rovers still sells beer, but no meat pies. Or anything with meat. Reason is, he is a vegan.

I really hope that this guy knows his fanbase. If I was a Forest Green Rover supporter and I could not eat meat, I would transfer my support to another soccer team.

Caveat - I have never heard of the Forest Green Rovers until I read this article. Maybe publicity based on ingenuousness is what the owner is after.

A "fourth tier" soccer team, currently ranked 9th (of 10) in their league. Not a resounding, positive example of the benefits of being vegan.

Their home field will seat 2000. Any high school I attended could seat more, and I could get a hot dog, too.

A lot of vegans hate capitalism and demonize the "rich". English football is based on money. You might even call American football "socialist" because of our equal opportunity draft. In English football, money rules. Forest Green Rovers could rise up to the Premier League but it will take oodles of cash.

What does this mean? Premier League teams like Manchester City and Chelsea will sell meat pies and play at the highest level. Forest Green Rovers will remain in the 4th tier and may even get relegated to the lower levels.

Since a couple posters have brought up tiers and relegation, I should explain that for the audience.

In English soccer, there are "tiers". There is a mix of amateur and professional teams. Most pro teams are in tiers 1-4 plus the PREMIER LEAGUE.

Premiere League is the "cream of the crop". Below League Four are some pro teams, but often amateurs. Technically, any soccer team, pro or amateur, in England can win the FA Cup - the championship of English soccer.

In every level, a team can also advance to a higher level (be promoted), or descend to a lower level (be relegated). In theory, it is possible for a bunch of drunk blokes in Liverpool to start a soccer team and be promoted to the Premier League. It has never happened, unless you count the original teams that were started in the 19th century.

Forest Green Rovers have to sign good players to be promoted. They also need money in order to sign those players. By going vegan, they are going to lose money and be relegated to a level of English football that is only known to people in small towns.

They can pick fruit, berries, and nuts-but it lacks the convenience and comfort of Whole Foods. They will have to move to the rural areas and ask meat eating conservatives for some of their gardens.

Maybe Burger King can make them some FAKE MEAT pies.

(Hey, America already leads the world in production of FAKE BEER!!!!)

    Sol Star: He's not mad.
Al Swearengen: He's got a mean way of being happy.
