I grew up in a town of a thousand up in the PH, I'll bet you half the people living there today still don't lock their doors.

Fortunately we have very "user friendly" self defense laws particularly in the home and after dark. Bad guys know they are taking a huge risk unlawfully entering a home in TX but as a rule criminals are generally pretty stupid and/or chemically dependent.

This is a general statement & probably doesn't apply in high crime areas: I've found that where I live we have very few to almost no real criminals. What we have are sly people that will take things when they see them & think that they can get away with them. Kind of a theft by opportunity kind of thing. And those people generally steal from people they either know or that live close to them. A wild guess on my part is that type person makes up 90% of the stealing type crime around here. I would assume that would explain why certain areas might have a much higher crime rate than other areas.
