I was never hired to be a mere automaton. (Like most people, I had a life outside of work; and I fully expected my employer to respect that.)

    Addressed above.

And all this seems to assume that the employer is more important to the employee than the employee is to the employer.

And I simply find this view to be...well, jaw-dropping...

Well, that is not what I was ever accustomed to.

If I simply did not show up for work--no asking-in-advance required--I would be paid a personal day (or a sick day, if I were out of personal days).

Admittedly, each company has a different policy in this regard.

Per-hour wages were no doubt reduced in order to compensate for these personal days.

So why should one have to "produce" anything during this time, in order to be paid for it?

Well, they were certainly not "out of the question" where I worked for the last 17 1/4 years of my working lifetime--or even many years prior to that.

Do you have a real problem with that?

And that, of course, is not a serious argument; it is merely an ad hominem attack.

    Oh, I see.

Because I received personal days--and because I simply cannot imagine that anyone would accept a job that does not include them, as a part of the benefits package--I must not have thought that my work "had value."

    Got it...

Obviously, I do "care" about the person that I mentioned, who is receiving a very weak benefits package...

Probably THE most stupid question I've ever heard.

People with common sense know, if you don't work, you don't get paid.

It's stupid, to expect an employer to pay employees for NOT working.

I used to get personal days, and holidays, and paid vacation days, and sick days. Guess I got pretty lucky.
