Toddler Falls 150 Feet to Her Death After ‘Slipping From Grandfather’s Arms’ on Cruise ship

    Silke Jasso, July 8, 2019 10:42 am

A family trip turned into a nightmare after a toddler tragically died after plunging 150 feet from a cruise ship. The 1-year-old girl allegedly slipped from her grandfather’s arms and fell from the 11th floor of the Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas ship. The toddler is believed to have fallen onto the concrete below while the ship docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

According to the local Primer Hora, the Indiana girl was on holiday with her grandparents and parents. The grandfather was holding his granddaughter up to an open window where they were playing but accidentally lost his grip. The girl fell from a port-side window and hit an awning before landing on a pavement at the dock. She was immediately rushed to the hospital around 4:30 p.m. but was pronounced dead minutes after arrival. Police are currently conducting an investigation and are reviewing CCTV of the cruise ship, as well as interviewing other passengers who witnessed the incident at the time.

According to police, the girl’s family has not been interviewed by detectives, but police believe the incident was an accident. The boat has a height of 210 feet and the 11th floor is said to have been around 150 above land level when the vessel was docked. The ship holds roughly 4,000 passengers and was just ending its seven-day Southern Caribbean Cruise of Antigua, St Lucia, and Barbados.

Owen Torres, Corporate Communications Manager for Royal Caribbean, released a statement saying that the cruise operator was “deeply saddened” by the tragic incident and the company had made its “Care Team available to assist the family” with all the resources they needed. Royal Caribbean stated they would not be offering any additional comments or further details of the incident out of respect for the family’s privacy.

QNow, let’s all say what we’re thinking. Why would someone hold a toddler out of a window? Can someone explain this to me? Of course, I’m not blaming the grandfather, but this just seems like a bad idea. This hurts my heart. My thoughts are with the family.

The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.

how stupid. A number of years ago, a grandmother dropped her granddaughter off a second story walk way onto pavement below...on purpose. The child was 2 years old. The grandmother had not wanted her daughter to marry the guy or some such stupid reason. It would not hurt to investigate the thinking of the grandfather. Generally....people that old aren't inclined to take risks like that because at that age they realize how easily the unthinkable can happen.

Remember when Michael Jackson held his infant over the bannister?

Fathers day weekend, we were camping in Idaho. My great granddaughter is very adventurous and said she wanted to shoot my .22 cal pistol. Both her parents and my son encouraged her to fire it. She heard the noise and said no thanks and would not handle the pistol. She is nearing 8 years old.

The family is trying to put the blame on the cruise line

A toddler from Indiana was in a play area on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship when she fell from an open window to her death Sunday in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a lawyer for the family said.Attorney Michael Winkleman said 1-year-old Chloe Wiegand's grandfather sat her on a railing in a play area near what he believed was a closed window."Chloe wanted to bang on the glass like she always did at her older brother's hockey games," Winkleman said in a statement emailed to The Indianapolis Star, part of the USA TODAY Network. "Her grandfather thought there was glass just like everywhere else, but there was not, and she was gone in an instant."

Winkleman said the family wants to know why one open window was in a wall of clear glass in the play area."Why would you have the danger without any warning, sign or notice?" Winkleman asked.Police earlier said the grandfather, Salvatore Anello of Valparaiso, told officers he lost his grip while holding the girl outside a window on the 11th floor of the Freedom of the Seas, according to The Associated Press.
