    Kalashnikov AK-9 compact assault rifle

    Kalashnikov AK-9 compact assault rifle

    Caliber: 939 mm SP-5, SP-6
    Action: Gas operated, rotating bolt
    Overall length: 465 / 705 mm; 646 / 881 mm with silencer
    Barrel length: ?
Weight: 3,1 kg with empty magazine, 3.8 kg with silencer installed
Rate of fire: ? rounds per minute
    Magazine capacity: 20 rounds

The AK-9 is the most recent addition to the line of the Russian-made weapons, built for the family of the sub-sonic 939 ammunition, which includes SP-5 ball and SP-6 armor-piercing rounds. The AK-9, developed by the Izhevsk Machine building plant (IzhMash, the home of Kalashnikov assault rifles) is intended to compete with already established weapons such as AS silenced assault rifle and 9A-91 and SR-3M multipurpose compact assault rifles. The AK-9 is intended for use by special elements of the Russian army (recon troops) and by various Law Enforcement agencies, engaged in anti-terror, anti-drug and anti-organized crime operations. However, for some reasons AK-9 remained in prototype only, and never entered production.

The AK-9 is based on the so-called "hundred series" of Kalashnikov assault rifles, such as AK-104, but with certain improvements. It features same tried and proven gas operated, rotary bolt action and same "Kalashnikov-style" controls including reciprocating bolt handle, safety/fire selector lever and overall layout with side-folding polymer buttstock. Polymer furniture is improved with addition of the accessory Picatinny rails on the bottom of the forend, and the left side of receiver is fitted with Russian-standard scope rail. Barrel can be fitted with specially designed quick-detach silencer (sound moderator), which is especially effective with 939 subsonic ammunition. Magazine is made of black polymer, holds 20 rounds of ammunition and appears to be of proprietary design, not compatible with other (competing) weapons of the same caliber, which are already in service with Russian military and law enforcement.

If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration. Nicola Tesla

The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.

    Interesting, BUT: 9 X 39

I'd rather have the higher velocity 7.62 (30 caliber) x 39 with much more readily available ammo. But then I get the drift of this round being more 'suppressible'. So...... cool and thanks.

Yeah, last time I saw one of those was never. It looks like the suppressor is integrated into the barrel.

    SKS / AK-47 rounds are 7.62 ( .308 ) 39 ( case length ).

So the Vintorez is a 9mm (.365 ) diameter bullet 39 in a AK length case. ( I think I got that right - recall Larry Vickers as saying ).

.365 still falls in a 9mm diameter, but traditionally 9mm is .355 diameter ; like what is in American 9mm handguns. 9mm American ammo is either .355 or .356 diameter - depending on manufacturer.

    You don't get into 10mm ( .40 caliber ) , I think till you get to --- ??? .410 or .411 Diameter.

Then 12 mm hits about ----- .450 or .451 diameter.

12.7 mm is 50 caliber. .50 diameter bullets.

Trying to recall my ballistic tables, but for the most part I am right.

It is. There is a video on YouTube of Spetsnaz ----- an Alpha Team I think, doing a room clearing exercise. They line up in a stack in body armor and do a room clearing exercise with Vintorez rifles.
