This is a strange story from Vietnam I have never heard.

You couldn’t leave a claymore behind. You set them up as a night perimeter or as ambush initiators but couldn’t leave a live one behind to be commandeered by the enemy.

I have been a study of Army LRP’s and the later Ranger LRRP’s six man teams. They recounted this in one briefing. They were not a fan of more than 4 man patrols. The six man SOP made many old timers quit.

......once a thousand people had lived in the valley to which Lutken now came. He stood on a high ridge and looked across the green jungles to the mountains on the far side. Where had all the people gone? Why had they gone away? The Kachins had a strange answer. " It is because of the weretigers, duwa, " said the jaiwa. ~ Behind Japanese Lines - With the OSS in Burma~Richard Dunlap

Yes. Less noise , less smells , less tracks also. The LRP mission was not to engage so fire power was not an issue.

These teams were priority #1 for the NVA. They had bounties on their heads and spotters were everywhere looking to send out hunter platoons or more in search of them. When inserting they did many false touch downs to throw off the actual LZ is used. By 1970 a large portion of the possible LZ’s were monitored and/or booby trapped. It was getting tough to be recon when the NVA knew the air and artillery strikes called by LRRP’s was more costly and dangerous than taking on line troop battalions.
I’m going to have to find out more about the Marine Recon missions now. Thanks.
