The Zimmerman telegram was intercepted by British intelligence in early 1917. In it, Germany offered Mexico portions of U.S. territory if Mexico would back Germany in the war. Wilson parlayed that telegram into an excuse for getting into the war (along with the sinking of the passenger liner Lusitania by a German U-boat).

In reality, Mexico was in no position to either hurt or help the Germans as they were in the midst of their own revolution (starting in 1910). The leadership in Mexico had been a revolving door of various entities, some military some non-military. Yet despite Mexico's instability it was close enough for government work to Wilson. You know the rest.

The aftermath of WWI was total devastation in Europe and people were starving to death all over the continent. An industrialist from Iowa named Herbert Hoover led multiple drives to feed the starving people and those drives required the coalition of nations from all over the world. There are statues of Hoover in places such as Belgium erected to celebrate his heroic efforts.

When Hoover became president he foresaw economic hardships on the horizon in American despite the good fortune being experienced at the time. The rest of the world was in a deep economic slump and Hoover feared that slump would eventually bleed into our country too. But Congress refused to act as Hoover suggested and the crash of 1929 proved Hoover's fears were well founded.

FDR and the newspapers blamed Hoover for the crash of course, allowing FDR to take his place as president. But instead of enacting all the public programs FDR promised in the campaign he spent his first two years in office repaying all the entities that helped him get elected such as the unions. While Americans were starving in the streets FDR and his cronies got fat and happy.

Only after the "friends of FDR" were squared away did the president turn his attention to the little people. Barack Obama would repeat this pattern of FDR crony capitalism in his first two years in office following the housing crash. All the "friends of Obama" were taken care of first and to hell with the little people who were suffering the brunt of economic turmoil.

Think our high school history books got these juicy little tidbits right?
