The uncle that was at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, "Was engaged," to a woman that was a WAC. They were engaged for more than 30 years until he retired and moved to Miami Beach and married a young babe he met on the beach!

And that worked out, they were together until he died, and she still is part of the family.

Mom had a "second" VE day when I got back from SE Asia. My class A uniform was so loose I could have turned around in it. One tended to loose a lot of weight there.

She hugged me until I thought she would never let go. A wonderful memory now.

That's a beautiful memory for sure. Losing an adult child is the worst thing to happen to a parent. I know from losing my oldest daughter.

Lost my eldest son in a T/A. First wife never recovered from that and died young, 2 years later.

Death, hateful, but part of life.

That's so sad. Some people can't recover and others do live on but the pain doesn't go away. Yes, that's life.

For my father - who was part of a recon squadron on the front line - it was not a happy day.

Or, rather, it was - and then a few days or weeks later, reality set in.

He was German and American - and had grown up in about the same land he was doing recon with his squad. It was why he got sent to the European Theatre - a seventeen-year-old kid out of the Cleveland projects when he was processed - and he spoke the language perfectly.

And while his platoon buds were all waiting for their orders back to the Big PX...he got a new task. Someone had to record the captured documents. Someone fluent in the language.

The documents of the extermination camps. So, anyone who could read and write and speak German, was pressed into clerical work.

With a scholarship at Ohio State waiting (the GI Bill of Rights not existing, yet) he was held in the Army for two additional years.

Reading, and recording and annotating, the vile crimes against decency that were done by "his" people.

No, it was not all smiles on V-E Day. For many, it was the beginnings of a dark time.

I wish the country was as united now as they were then...at that moment.I fear the divide that exist today is far too wide to ever be bridged.

I think the nation was more divided in the early 60's. And the hippies of then are the liberals of today. And for a wild card we had segregation.

Which black "leaders" are again trying to impose.

For the hippies of the time, we have the hipsters. For the anarchist professors of the time - which were only a few of the total professoriate - we have today's 1960s retreads, with lifetime sinecures, who control the universities.

The hippies of that time were all about peace, love, sex, pot. Today's hipsters are all about "democratic" "socialism," gender-bending and desexing...and drugs, of course.

The problems are the same - the valueless, morality-free are trying to institutionalize their dissipation; but they're having a great-deal more success. They have the Deep State, which is tenfold the size it was then - and back then it was controlled by the Establishment.
