No one needs Battleships. The ONLY modern purpose would be for shore bombardment.

A modern Arleigh Burke Destroyer could likely take an old Battleship on. Two or three of them, easily.

A few navies have the heavy Battle Cruisers, but, our Destroyers can easily match those.....

China has one MASSIVE problem before they even get to any American Fleets stationed around the Arabian Gulf: The Indian Ocean. Where they would likely face a joint force of Indian and American ships, possibly with some French and English vessels thrown in. (IT would be, after all...THEIR oil.)

Speaking of which: How long can the Persian Mullahs feed, arm and fuel their military, if they don't have an income, other than taxing their own citizens???

This is all bluster. Probably meant more for domestic consumption than anything else, as their own people are getting ansy.....

All the new, FORD Class Carriers, which are built to use electromagnetic "catapults" and, possibly being fitted with Lasers or Rail Guns, in the future.

They WILL "replace" some of the current carriers we have, but, that is to be expected.

Right now, the ONLY nation that has a carrier anywhere near what we have at sea, are the French.

    They have ONE.

All other carriers lack the "steam catapult" system, so, they have to have "ramps" on their decks, or, use Vertical Takeoff planes. In both cases, that severely limits they type and range of the carrier-based aircraft.

OH. And we can also operate at night, in total darkness.......

    We WILL decommission a few.

Basically, you take the crew from an existing, older Carrier, and, put them on a new, shiny, updated carrier.

We really do not need more than 10 or so. (Which are already superior to everyone else in the world, both in quality and quantity...)

Plus, there is the massive cost in crewing these massive beasts.

Might want to keep a few of the decommissioned "mothballed" instead of destroying them, however. (JUST in case). Again....the carriers we currently have are vastly superior to anyone else in the world (Except the LONE, French Carrier that is about equal...)

Since WW ll the main mission of the battleship was to provide naval shore fire support for the Marine Corps.

After the last gun cruisers were deactivated in the early and mid 1970's the U.S. Navy hasn't been able to provide the Marine Corps with adequate NSFS.

The Arleigh Burke destroyers only have one 5"/54 pop gun. Aegis class cruisers only have two 5"/54 pop guns.
Neither are capable of providing the NSFS required by the Marine Corps and the Army.

An old WW ll era Gearing class destroyer was capable of firing six round 5"/38 savos while the Arleigh Burke destroyers can only fire one gun salvos. Grunts on the ground need six gun savos when dealing with area targets.

    Re: Iowa class battleships.

In one hour an Iowa class BB can put more tons of ordnance on target than an entire carrier air wing can in 24 hours.

The Iowa class BB's that were reactivated during the Reagan administration were also armed with Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles and Harpoon anti ship missiles.

But it was the Iowa's 16" guns that scared the crap out of America's enemies.

Remember when Reagan reactivated the four Iowa's BB's and the Soviet Union had a complete meltdown knowing that they had no weapons platform that could sink an Iowa class battleship ?

During the Vietnam War, North Vietnam demanded that the USS New Jersey be removed from the Western Pacific before even starting peace talks.
The Armor Piercing (AP) shell fired by these guns is capable of penetrating nearly 30 feet (9 m) of concrete, depending upon the range and obliquity of impact. The High Capacity (HC) shell can create a crater 50 feet wide and 20 feet deep (15 x 6 m). During her deployment off Vietnam, USS New Jersey (BB-62) occasionally fired a single HC round into the jungle and so created a helicopter landing zone 200 yards (180 m) in diameter and defoliated trees for 300 yards (270 m) beyond that... -> http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_16-50_mk7.php

I think there were plans for a guided projectile as well.

    2500 fps muzzle velocity.

Our carrier planes can land in zero-zero conditions as long as there isn't green water breaking over the bow.

Valerie Jarrett was born and raised in Iran.

Valerie being Obama's senior advisor was probably why Obama always gave Iran what they wanted.
